I just bought a nickel plated Uberti Cattleman II and after firing it for the first time, I noticed the dreaded etched ring halfway around the cylinder. I was careful to go from half-cock to full-cock before lowering the hammer. Could this be due to an out of tuned action or something else? I did pull the cylinder out to clean it and was wondering if when I reinserted it, I inadvertently caused this to happen. Also, is there a way to remove the etched line on a nickel finish without removing too much of the nickel plating or am I stuck with it?

Thanks. Would I need a gunsmith to adjust the timing or is that something I could accomplish on my own? And buffing out the scratches by hand using something like Flitz?

Just re-read the OP so first, does this revolver have the retractable firing pin or no?

Since the beauty ring is from notch to notch, the bolt head may not be retracting fully, thus making the ring. It may be possible to save the installed bolt depending on when the bolt drop (3rd click) happens. First, are there 4 (at least) clicks when you cycle the action? With cylinder removed, does the bolt retract fully into the frame or does it remain fully extended?
At half cock (second click) the bolt should be flush or close to flush with the frame. Where is yours?
If it's retracting, does it "pop back up" (drop) just after half cock (bad) or close to full cock (good)?
The answers to these questions will help diagnose your problem.
