Just received a UFH bayonet. It does NOT have a date but does have the flaming bomb on the tang and UF, but NO date. However, the guard does have some numbers stamped into it. The scabbord also has the flaming bomb. So how do I know this is WWII vintage? It is NOT the 16" blade length. Otherwise, it's a very nice piece and the fellow who sold it to me is a super nice guy, so I really have no reason to doubt that the bayonet is not authentic. Help please! Thanks.

Some dated...

So do I understand that UFH only made bayonets in 1942 and 1943 years only? Does the serial stamping on the guard portion near the tang indicate anything at all?
Thanks for the info. Someone said if it did not have a date, it wasn't real????

UFH = Union Fork & Hoe.

They only made M1942 & M1 bayonets for two years during WWII.

It should be marked either U.F.H. over U. bomb S., all with periods. (no date)
Or UFH over U bomb S with no periods. (no date)
Or UFH over U bomb S with no periods, over 1942, or 1943.

So I'd say date or no date, it is real.

WWII bayonets had no serial number*. UFH made M1905 (16") bayonets, and M1 (10") bayonets, plus converting M1905 bayonets to M1 length.

Earlier M1905 and some M1892 bayonets were serial numbered but as accountable items in themselves; the number did not match a rifle.

Items lent to other allied nations during and after WW2 often obtained serial numbers.
