GARDEN GUNMAN HUNTED

SIMON MCGEE, JAMES KAY AND STEVEN FLETCHER

12:00 - 08 August 2003
Dozens of extra police were drafted into Radford today after the city's
fifth shooting in less than a month.

A man was wounded in the stomach in Byfield Close at about 2.45pm yesterday.

The 35-year-old from St Ann's had emergency surgery last night at the
Queen's Medical Centre.

A friend said the victim was visiting his house when he was shot in the
front garden.

Shootings in gun free England? One of Robyn's men free lancing now? Surely it could not have been done with something as uncivilised or proscribed like a, ahem, firearm. England after all, does not have a heritage of violence like the Americans do and besides, it simply isn't sporting to pot a chap standing in a garden.

Now, now, the important thing is that the CRIMINAL wasn't injured; can you imagine what would happen if the person who was shot had been able to protect himself? It makes me shiver just thinking about it

yes, the fair content of the two previous posters makes me feel my comments are going to be unwelcome - well they often are so here goes:

Yes, it happens in this country, but as I will point out (and then, when it suits you to, you will say ''two cultures can't be compared'') that the murder rate is 4 times higher in the US and over 2/3 of murders in the US involve firearms. I believe that the equivalent stat is under 10% in this country.

So don't trot out the things that happen over here when I don't trot out all the gun related violence that happens over there.

On the subject of guns I was interested by your arguments and certainly not at all decided about what I felt. Then I read these kind of posts and I remember - ''to be a welcome Brit on THR you have to attack your govt and never attack the US govt.''

And? Back when guns where completely unergulated in the UK, the UK had less murders than the US, and far less than what it has now.

The percentage of murders committed with guns is irrelevant, it is the total murder rate that is relevant. Remember, if all the US gun murders wouldn't happen, IIRC the US would STILL have a higher murder rate than the UK.

Not by me, SinJohn. Unopposed dialogue is pretty boring. I kind of like the way you and agricola unabashedly point out the distinct cultural differences between the UK and the majority opinion on THR. Hang tough, Old Boy.
