When I saw the title I was like "ooh sweet, homeowners are finally Enabled to protect their lives and property" then I realized it was a law Enabling ye Crown to more effectively Oppresse its Subjects.

Yawn. Ha, that's nothing compared to the USA PATRIOT Act. It doesn't even really have a catchy 1984 ish title. "Civil Contingencies Act", or "CCA" is not catchy enough, or cyanically named.

The USA PATRIOT Act appears to expand where the govt can trawl for information, some stuff on warrents and expanding what can be used as evidence in courts.

Civil Contingencies act gives you the legal means to declare martial law over anything.

Pfft! US govt has had those powers for well over a hundred years. Most of them were used during the Civil War, WWII, etc. Heck, our "martial law" laws allowed US citizens to be rounded up, their property stolen, and crowded into camps because they happened to be a minority. (Japanese-Americans, WWII)

UK is just trying to keep up with the Jones.

Well, it seems the US now has to play catch up.

This act allows martial law if some people may become homeless, if the buses go on strike, or if some trees get cut down.

This has to be one of the Worst Ideas in the History of Bad British Ideas..... :banghead: :barf:

they can suspend or repeal any law at any time, and exempt any government servant from it by signing an order.

All the above and all it takes is a minister or two and the primeminister to decide that it's needed. Oh joy.

Having worked as a civil servant in the CJ system I am nervous about letting that bunch having any more power than an aneorexic ameboa. 1984 indeed.

Now where did I put those emigration applications?
