Alright. Here's a question I would like topose to you guys.

I have medium sized hands, and like having a full grip on any of my pistols.

What is the BEST large or medium caliber carry pistol.

I'd prefer it to NOT be 1911 style, because carrying something cocked and locked in my pants scares me a little :)

So far, the Glock 27C seems to be nice for a .40 cal, which I'm most comfortable with, and the Springfield XD Sub Compact is nice as well.

My criteria is MOSTLY: Stopping power, Concealability, and weight.

Any other suggestions?

You will have to try different guns. I have medium sized hands as well and what works perfect for me might not for you. Personally, I would try either the SA XD Subcompact or the CZ RAMI. The RAMI points alot better for me but that may be because I am used the the CZ design.

Ruling out 1911's helps, but you have not narrowed the field down much.

Go to a range and rent as many different types as you can.

You have HK, Sig, Glock, Walther, S&W, Ruger, etc.

Try to determine if you want DA/SA, DAO, Glock style trigger. It seems you don't want cocked and locked, so that helps some.

Do you want a metal or polymer frame?

Caliber-- .45 .40 9mm .357sig etc. What do you like best?

Do you want double or single stack mags? Is mag capacity an issue?

How would you like to carry-- IWB, OWB, SOB, Shoulder, Ankle, Thunderwear :uhoh:

A loaded Glock is cocked and unlocked. Have you considered that? It does not have the two safeties found on a 1911 in the same condition. ND's happen more often with Glocks than with 1911's.

I like the feel of the 1911, but not even having a decocker scares me a little (not that I trust decockers infallibly...)

I PREFER a .40 s&w, because I'm used to the shooting and mannerisms of that particular caliber. The Glock compensated seemed nice for the lightness of the gun, and the porting would help with the recoil on such a light gun.

Since I will be using a 40 cal XD for my duty weapon, I was thinking thew same as my conceal would be nice, but I'm looking for the best type and was looking for recomendations :)

I'm looking primarily for a DA or DAO.

I plan to carry IWB (everyday) and shoulder (for parties and the like).

The Glock style action worries me a little, and that's why I'm going with the XD for my duty carry. That extra safety is a nice feature.

Take a good look at the Taurus PT-145 Millennium Pro. Small enough to be concealable (though not a pocket-rocket by any means), grips big enough for average hands, small enough to get a good grip. Eleven rounds of .45 ACP, double-action only with fairly decent trigger pull, and manual safety for those who desire the add'l safety feature. Good combat accuracy, and feeds anything I've been able to stuff in it.

Since you`ll be using an XD-40 for a duty gun an XD-40 sub compact seems like a no brainer for a carry gun. They can share full sized mags for reloads and the manual of arms will be *exactly* the same. Same sights, same trigger pull etc. so they`ll all crossover also. They`re nice little guns too. If you like a full length grip just get some Pearce grip extensions for the SCP mags.
Leaving out the whole XD thing I`d say Kahr P-40. I actually had an XD-40SCP on order when I saw a P-40 in the cabinet for a great price. Comparing the P-40 to a 9mm XD SCP they had in stock the Kahr was thinner and much less bulky. It allows a full three fingered grip and the trigger is sweet! You give up 3rds. which is a bummer but with one in the chamber you still have 7rds. of .40 which is nothing to sneeze at. I ended up with the P-40 and I`m not sorry at all. I can`t believe how this thing shoots for a little poly framed pistol. "Head shots" at 25yds. are childs play and it`s suprisingly controlable. It`s svelt shape and light weight make it a real pleasure to carry, ditto for the small single stack mags. Marcus

Got some hard data on the ND statement??

I'm confused.

If you are concerned with carrying a 'cocked and locked' pistol in your pants, are you seriously considering carrying a 'cocked and un-locked' Glock in your pants?

salty.

If that G27 is working for ya, go w/ that! My other suggestion is to rent a bunch of guns that fit your criteria and buy the one that works best for you in your hands ;)

I don't understand your concern with carrying cocked and locked. It's perfectly safe, provided you use a good quality holster that covers the trigger guard (which is even more important for designs without a manual safety and grip safety).

If I didn't carry a 1911, the only other guns I would consider would be the Glock 9mms, the SIG DAK models, and the Kahr K-9.

Glocks are partially cocked, not fully cocked, blah blah blah. Otherwise they'd be single action, hmm?

P7 works for me, but as with any platform, carefully weigh the positives with the negatives.

O.K., mentally edit my post to read..

''If you are.....carrying a 'cocked and un-locked' Safe Action Glock in your pants".

salty.

The pistol that I consider to be nearly the ultimate concealed carry weapon is my CZ PCR. It's virtues are that it is compact yet big enough to allow me a full grip, has an alloy frame for lighter weight, shoots very accurately and reliably, holds 14+1 rounds of the 9mm of your choice, and that IMO it just looks good. The only drawbacks for me are that it is only available in 9mm, and I would slightly prefer it with a safety to allow cocked and locked carry as an option instead of a decocker. IMO a .40 caliber version with a manual safety would be the ultimate concealed carry weapon.
