I picked up a box of 250 Ultramax .38 Special 158gr SWC's from Dick's Sporting Goods the other day. These are listed at 800 fps so they work out nicely for our indoor range limits. I also picked up a box of their lead 40 S&W's too. I actually got $25 off by throwing some baseballs into the strike zone at the store but that is another story in itself. :) I've tried their .45 ACP 230gr LRN loadings with pretty good results in a SW1911, so why not give these a shot. They are perfect in a pinch for indoor stuff. The brass is mixed like the other loadings. I took off to the range with the 6" Colt Python, 4" S&W Model 19, and what I thought was a 6" Ruger GP 100 in a range bag sleeve. Scratch the Ruger, it was my M&P 40 that was hiding in there. Picked up the wrong sleeve. Damn I hate when I do that. :banghead: I played around shooting offhand for awhile to get the feel of the guns and to settle down my shakiness. I haven't shot in a few months so I wasn't at my best to start plus I was shooting over twice the distance that I had been practicing at (21 ft.) last fall. I was getting pretty comfortable at that distance with the 1911 and working on technique. The groups showed it too because I could put a box of 50 in 1 ragged hole. The Python is box stock and has been sitting in the cabinet for a quite a bit. As far as I know, the Smith is stock (my Dad's gun), although the trigger is very very light in single action mode. hmmm The ammo was very dirty judging by the Python's cylinder. :cuss: I cleaned the Smitty up for the picture. The Python ran threw the whole session without a hitch except for me playing with the sights. All the cases extracted nicely, all went bang, and the groups got smaller once I settled in. I did a bunch of double action and single action offhand to get the feel. I don't know what it is with the Python's white outline with orange fronts but I don't pick up a good read from them. The 19's are just plain black in the back and aren't as busy. I guess it didn't matter much because the Colt's groupings were usually smaller for each set. So much for that theory. :what: The Smith had problems with hard extraction from the start. It sooted up pretty bad then I had a couple that didn't go bang near the end. Not the ammos fault, no strike at all! Hard to describe it without actually watching it happen. I was trying to look at the front sight. hehe I will snap cap the 19 to death to duplicate it again. I was pleased with the overall accuracy because I know I'm not seeing the targets the clearest. All in all, the worst grouping from the Python was a little bigger than the size of a softball at the start with no rest. That's not to shabby for me after fattening up over the winter. lol I did pull a good group off with the Python to end the day. I managed the best group with the 19 at the end too, that was also wondering if it was gonna light the fuse. It makes me want to put the scope back on the Python and have some real fun when doing bench shooting. I had to quit because I think there is only 50 loads left for the Ruger. The ammo is dirty but seems pretty accurate compared to other factory stuff I've tried. One thing is for certain, I hate cleaning these puppies up. :cuss: Here some pics, enjoy!
