ultrasonic gun cleaner solutions ...

so a while back i got one. noticed that the unit came with some proprietary cleaning solution. fairly expensive too.

i was thinking of using simple green as a cheap substitute for a not-too-dirty gun.

any thoughts on what to use in a pinch?

In the college jewelry (really small sculpture) shop we used to use Mr. Clean. I wasn't able to test it on firearms. Something in the rules about firearms and college campus....

I'd stay away from anything with a low smoke/flash point... so CLP could be dangerous

Simple green ought to do a good job.

Search 6mmbr.com for Citranox. About $45 a gallon and you dilute it 100:1. It works well for brass. There are several other articles about ultra-sonic cleaning with compared results. One had a home made recipe on it somewhere.

MPro-7 works well in US cleaners. Re-use indefinitely by filtering through coffee filters.

Careful with the original Simple Green and aluminum. It can do bad things to it, like causing corrosion.

M-Pro 7 would be a good choice for firearms as it's basically a concentrated detergent that is aluminum-safe and will help remove fouling.

If it's got water in it, my guns aren't going in it.

I use good old Hoppe's No. 9 by the quart. I reuse it again and again, filter it through paper towels in a funnel, add fresh, use it again.

Nota bene: it contains kerosene, which is flammable. Ultrasonic gadgets tend to generate heat. Hoppe's No. 9 does a fine job, but you've got to turn on your cleaner briefly and not let the stuff get hot.

Ditto what Steve says about Simple Green and aluminum. Same goes for any of the "Purple Power" cleaning solutions you may find at auto parts stores...
