I am really sorry to hear about your loss. Its sounds pretty substantial.

Anyway, you've notified the police. Make sure every weapon missing is on their list. 20 years from now you don't want to have an unpleasant surprise.

Now you have to ask yourself how did the BG's know about your collection? Service people coming into the house? Maybe a talkative friend? Maybe a guy who claims to be a friend but really isn't?

I hope things work out.

It definitely sounds like they knew what they were looking for. I know it may sound crazy, but do you have a roomate or a former roomate?

I'd take it as a sign my security was woefully inadequate and do a major revamp. I've personally taken these steps to limit my exposure to this kind of tragedy:

--Limit access to my place and limit the number of people who know where it is.
--Keep relocating.
--Keep some firearms cached off site
--Keep the number of firearms I own down to a minimum, no more than five
--Ensure that either myself or a guard dog are around the open firearms 24/7.
--Excess firearms that aren't sold or cached are stowed within the structure of the unit, never in a gun safe or locked display case. If I had a safe I'd fill it with junk and lock it.
--Disable any firearm in my vehicle by removing the bolt and stowing it on my person or in a secret place in the car.

get a nice gun safe. we have a 500lb'er when empty, if any criminal can get that up a flight of stairs, weighing over 800lbs full, while the alarm is blaring, and then get it open, i dont know what else to do; i'd say i fulfilled my obligation as a responsible owner:scrutiny:

My advice is to find one of those online tests that assesses your risk of being burglarized. Here's one.

https://www.rateyourrisk.org.secure.moses.com/burglary.html

Take the test and think very hard about the questions as you answer them. I think you'll probably be able to figure out who took your guns--or at least what you did that made them a target.

Checking the pawnshops is a good idea.

once the police make the report, don't they ( guns) automatically become labeled in a computer system as stolen by the police? or do i have to notify a Govt agency or something, or do the police do that? would'nt the pawn shop have to run the serial number to check if it's stolen? i called the NRA to see how they cou\ld help me, but the only thing they told me was to file a claim form for the insurance that the membership benefit entitles me to. i should recieve that in the mail..they also gave me a lawyer referral # to call..oh, we;ll!

You're assuming they didn't take the guns to a pawn shop the very next day, before the police paperwork has time to make it into the system. I don't know how long it takes, but I'd imagine there has to be some sort of lag time between the police report and the pawn shops getting a hit on the guns if they call them in.

Here in AZ a shop has a 14 day hold on all guns they buy, dunno how other states are...

I and a friend were both burglarized a few months apart. We both found that the goods were pawned within 24 hours...in fact when his camera gear was stolen on a Wednesday while he was at work, I was cruising the pawnshops on my way home that afternoon BEFORE I KNEW that he had been burgled, I saw someone bringing in a batch of gear that looked familiar. I stepped out and called him, only to learn that he had been hit. Told him that a guy with his gear was THERE INSIDE, he notified the officer STANDING THERE WITH HIM. I watched the individual pulling my friends items out of the bag, walked back in and asked if I could see what he was selling, so I could verify the S/N and then looked the seller up and down carefully so I could give a good description. when the seller went to look at some tools in the store while the pawndealer looked up and valued everthing, I told him that those were stolen only a few hours ago. he agreed to find a way to keep them, so told the seller that it would take a while. Seller agreed and said he would go and get some coffee. seller left to get into a vehicle and depart, I wrote down the particulars. The police never did arrive at the pawnshop. My friend came in and had his list of stolen goods which matched what was on the conter exactly. My description of the seller matched the description of someone seen leaving my friends apartment. The police never even followed up. We tracked seller and spotted more good in his car...police actually stopped by on that one...but didnt arrest the punk!!

In my burglary, same friend likely interupted the burglary by coming to my place and letting himself in with his key at the front. perps fled out the back. Friend saw them leaving my yard and noted who it was. I arrived home later after teaching class and noted that things were GONE. called friend who noted that he had seen individuals X and Y exiting my property. Police KNEW who I was talking about. Some carefull police work yielded the two guns stolen when they were presented for sale at the SAME PAWN SHOP as above within 12 hours and most of my wife's jewelry but not my silver coins (later found to have been spent for face at the local AM/PM for cigs) while the gold coins have been recovered.

Note...friend and I live in different but close together towns...mine small, his much larger.

Good luck. Keep after it...and get some safer storage. My guns stolen were my ready guns in the bedroom...the safe was locked. I was off teaching Hunter Safety that night...Ironically the segment about sportmanship and ethics.

When firearms are reported stolen, they are entered into a database called III (aka Triple I), which is a national database.

To the best of my knowledge, all pawnshops have some type of waiting period for the turnaround of firearms that are sold to the shop. In WA State, it is 30 days.

This, of course, assumes one thing: that you gave the serial numbers of the firearms to the police. Unfortunately, if you don't have the serial numbers, there is nothing we can do for you except take a theft report.

The fact that they took guns AND ammunition points right at someone that you know, or someone that might have come into your house as the "friend of a friend", or perhaps a friend's teenage children.

Unfortunately, good quality guns command a high price on the street; if these thieves decide to go that route, you might never see your guns again.

To all: get a gun safe. Not the sheet metal kind, but the kind that will give you hernias trying to move it. One with a key-locking combination is a bonus.

Hide the safe out of public view, and in a place that is not visible to anyone looking in your window.

Get an alarm system; preferably one that is monitored locally.

Good luck on getting your guns back!

Sorry to hear your loss

But seriously get a safe, it doesn't have to ba a 500.00 to 1000.00 gun safe you can get a good fire safe for about 150.00. For my pistols I use a Brinks 5059 I welded some shelf tabs in so I can stack my guns. It holds a ss vaqureo & box of ammo on the top drawer, my 1911 is on the second shelf with shoulder rig and thirdly my 357 Taurus snubby on the bottom with other boxes of ammo and my hard drive and other little blings. It has a key combo lock so even if they find the key it won't open the safe as long as you turn the dial after locking it up. It's good for one hr @ 1700 deg F and bolted to the floor if you can always bolt down your safe's to a joyce or concrete. Another good thing about combo key locks is you never miss place your keys it's always hanging on my safe, as soon as I get home the first thing I do is put my key in there and open it.

lessons learned so far:
Trust no one outside familia...
Alarms do not stop thieves..
gun lockers are false security...
write down the serial # to all firearms in your collection...saves time & aggravation.
get the heaviest, strongest, best gun safe you can get...
it would have saved my firearms...
i have faith in the Houston Police Department.
wish me well, i don't wish for a second that anyone of Y'all go thru the range of negative emotions as i am experiencing over this loss...:cuss:

Over 10 years ago, I got hit and they got my prized Hi-Power. Fortunately, I had the serial number. About 4 months later, I got a call that they had taken it off some yahoo in the next county who was carrying it and 40 rocks of crack. Had to wait while the criminal case went through, but then I got it back.

BE SURE YOU HAVE A LIST OF SERIAL NUMBERS SOMEPLACE SAFE!
