The package from Centerfire Systems arrived.

They say the salvaged underfolder stocks fit "any stamped reciever", but it isn't going to fit my Romanian GP-WASR 10 without surgery, it seems.

I thought all I'd have to do is replace the (included) trunnion, but no...

Don't see a way around drilling a serious hole in the reciever.... :scrutiny:

Any thoughts? Anyone done it?

Thanks.

Ahhh, great, Garrett. Maybe not what I wanted to hear, but at least it confirms my suspicions. Think the folder is Yugo.

Measure twice, drill-press once.

Still, I would get a gunsmith to do this, if there was a good one in this little town.

I hate messing with recievers. I did get some good advice here about mags not fitting the GP-WASR 10; going to mike a good one and grind down the rest to the micrometer specs.

Even if all you had to do was replace the trunnion, thats still removing/drilling out the old rivets, and maybe drilling new holes, then riveting it back together. The 'hole' is actually like the size of a nickel. I'll try to find a picture.

Edit: Here ya go.

You've got the big hole, and a different rivet pattern. If you check out the 'build it yourself' section there, someone might have an exact template.

This what keeps me from getting one of those underfolder kits for my SAR-1. I think the underfolder stocks look the best but they are a lot of work unfortunatly.

I hear that ACE makes a side folder for the stamped AKs. ACE makes great stuff so I might check that out.

I had a Rom folder on the gun for a while but when I saw prices climb to $100, I sold it big time! :)

Thanks for help.

Not sure I can do this- it's not just a hole, I'm not a machinist.

Thinking about dummy-drilling a block of wood, to see if there are other problems before cutting metal.

Or I might send it back... dangit, and get an Arsenal w/underfolder.

I wish. They're like $900- got $400 in this w/stock.

What's wrong with a sidefolder?

They attach to the stamped European AK receivers quite easily, no drilling or riveting, are solid in their open position, and are definitely more comfortable on the cheek weld than the underfolder's rails.

"What's wrong with a sidefolder?"

Nothing is wrong with a side folder but he already has the under folder kit. I think he just wanted an under folder really bad. I know the feeling!

Installing an underfolder is a tricky job on a rifle that didnt come from the factory with one. I'm suprised that they are representing them as anything even resembling a "drop in" type of arrangment. IMHO it would be worth sending the whole thing to a smith and having it done right.

It's cake if you have a dremel and some patience. The hardest part will be drilling out the original rivets. After you remove the regular trunnion, clamp ther new one in and use the top cover to find the exact place for it to be installed. Drill new holes for the UF trunnion and rivet it in with a hammer and a pice of steel to support the rivet backs. The drill a small hole about where the UF holes are. Use the trunnion as a guide to dremel out the rest.

It's not rocket science. If they can build AK's in pakastan, you can build one in your garage. Here's my Polish PMKMS:
