I was just debating whether to get these for my 2" snub for field use. Black bears and mountain lions are my concern, but will also be a great round for 2 leggers where there is not enough population to worry about over penetration. Power Factor of 129 from a 2" snub compared to 112PF with 125gr makes it a good low recoil woods load. I figured that if I need it for a bear I have to get the job done with the 5 rounds in the cylinder and no chance of reloading, the 158gr +P Keith from Underwood Chrono 1050 to 1100 FPS from the snub with a whopping 174PF. Much more recoil, but a better chance to get the job done with 5 rounds. A less experienced shooter should choose the less recoiling round, IMO.
The 38 special is not my first choice for the field and is only a temporary solution.
My usual gun is a Glock modified for 45super, I only own 2 guns at the moment and cant really afford another. My next gun purchase planned is for my daughter, she is proficient with the 38 snub but not with my Glock until recently. Now that she can use the Glock 30 proficiently I decided to leave it to her for HD and carry the 38. The SD rounds of choice are 100gr Underwood Xtreme Defenders chronoing 860FPS from the snub and 86PF, I chose these rounds for my daughter who is 105lbs and they are not reliant on expansion as well as very low recoiling.
Im just about done with hollow points. The only rounds I use now in the Glock are Hardcasts and the Xtreme Defenders and Penetrators, all from Underwood. They also have 140gr +P Xtreme Penetrators in 38 special, but they chrono only 900FPS from a snub. They are probably on par with the 150gr wadcutter, but double the price.
