received a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan 44 mag unexpectedly for Christmas.. figure the wife might be telling me to plan an alaskan fishing trip sooner rather than later.

anyione ever shoot one of these bad boys? i own three .44 mag rifles and like them just fine.. have a qty of 24 grn H110 under 240 GRN JHP (xtp) ammo loaded up.

pretty warm load for a handgun i would think. I believe i'll load up some plinkers using cast lead to get a feel for the gun. then pick up some maybe 300 grn solids to load pretty stout for bear?

any suggested loads for bear country?

thanks

Its actually not too bad even with the Buffalo Bore 340gr "Ruger Only" loads. I fine it far more pleasant to shoot than a scandium j frame.

I have the .454 Casull version and it's enjoyable to shoot even with loads from the upper end of the power scale. The revolver is fairly heavy and the Hogue mono grip does a great job of mitigating felt recoil. Congrats on yours .... I think you'll really like it.

Good to hear. It's an Imposing piece of hardware. Looking forward to playing with it in the near future

The Alaskan is a handful with full tilt loads but is manageable.

For bear country I would want something like a 300-320gr WFNGC pushed by a max charge of H110. I would guess in that short barrel that would put you in the 1050-1100 fps range.

Couple that with a Simply Rugged holster with chesty puller system and you have a fine rig for protection while fishing.

i haven't taken any

might be my project tomrrow - figuring out how to post them once i take them. LOL

I took Buffalo Bore loads with me to Alaska. I had no trouble shooting them at all. The Alaskan handled them quite well.
