Anyone ever heard of or had any experience with the 5.6 von hoff? I just saw a very beautiful custom rifle for sale in this cartridge. Just curious

Edit: I did do a little looking via wiki. However, there’s an awful lot on wiki that is so inaccurate, I just kind of take everything with a grain of salt. Or maybe a salt shaker of salt, or a 40 pound bag of salt. Or perhaps 100 pounds Salt Lick brick. Maybe a truckload. Anyway…

Nonte's Home Guide to Cartridge Conversions lists two 5.6x61 'Von Hofe Express' (Donnelly called them 'Super Express', as does CIP) cartridges, rimmed and rimless.

Rimmed case is formed from 9.3x74R brass; the rimless is made from 30-06 brass (according to CIP figures this should be a bit undersized at the head -- expect bulging).

Here are the official CIP dimensions for both versions:

https://bobp.cip-bobp.org/uploads/tdcc/tab-i/tabical-en-page6.pdf
https://bobp.cip-bobp.org/uploads/tdcc/tab-ii/tabiical-en-page5.pdf

Depending on exactly when the rifle was made, the chamber dimensions may vary from the CIP standard -- I recommend doing a chamber cast. I'd also check carefully for erosion at the leade, as this cartridge looks like a real overbore barrel burner.

Well spotted!
I may have some experience in examining publications critically (sigh).
Checked the reference offered for Footnote 2: https://loaddata.com/Cartridge/56x6...press-56x61mm-Rmm-Vom-Hofe-Super-Express/1443
Which is but a single page of reloading data.
Which refers to "Swedish Husqvarna-Mauser action" but in no way refers to the 6.5x55 swede.
No Points for Gryffindor!

Such things are why theses and dissertations are printed with wide margins and double-spaced, so that extensive marginalia might be appended for the author's (and would-be author's) attention.

In fairness, wiki does list this as a "stub" meaning an incomplete article. It does show: "This page was last edited on 17 November 2021, at 15:38 (UTC)." But does not indicate "who/whom by" (sadly, all too common for wiki).

If I had enough "care to" I'd resurrect my wiki Editor credentials and see if I could still be allowed to make a standing edit. But, I'd have to go find a proper source to cross-reference. And, it would be "on hold" due to the way the system currently is run by its bots. And, I'd have to spend rather a long, tedious, time explaining my credentials, again, to people not as old as my credentials. Sigh.

My thoughts were the same in the barrel. It’s been sitting in this spot since before Christmas. It’s an immaculately (!!!!!) customized Mauser action (98 I believe) with a lavishly customized and intricately inlayed piece of furniture. I’ve looked at it a few times. Out of my budget range unfortunately….

I know nothing about this cartridge and it might be really lousy for any practical North American application, but man, the name just sounds cool. Plus there’s a certain cachet in saying “I see your 6.5 Dutch, or your .256 Mannlicher, if you insist… it’s adequate for the purpose. But I, I myself, would only think of hunting with my Von Hofe Express.

Don't be afraid to make an offer -- the worst that can happen is they tell you no.

Once I waited for over a year before asking the price on a minty Mauser Gewehr 98 single shot target rifle (Wehrmannsgewehr) in 8.15x46R. The chambering kept scaring off other buyers and the gunshop owner was so tired of seeing it just sitting on the rack that he practically gave it to me ($300, including ammo and dies). It's probably my favorite rifle.

Cartridges of the World (page 566 in the 16th edition) lists the round. It is - as it sounds - a European round, beltless, developed in the 1930s. Rifles were sporting type, based on the Mauser action.
The mention shows RWS ammunition propelling a 77 grain (very close to 5 grams) at 2800 fps. I'm not sure the cartridge will do anything the .22-250 Remington will not. (Remington twist rates lack the ability.)
I had a friend some years ago that had one. They were very nicely prepared and finished. Rare as well, he told me.
