USMC: IAR vs SAW

I'm surprised no one has floated the idea of a barrel-enclosure a-la the WW1 vintage Lewis LMGs and the new PKM's with the barrel enclosed and cooling "fins" on the outside of the barrel and inside the enclosure. As the gun fires, the muzzle blast draws air in the back and circulates cool air over the barrel and keeps it cool for sustained fire. Simple but brilliant.

I still don't understand how you can replace a LMG with a rifle (with add ons like heavy barrel, "rails" and a piston) it's still a rifle. The 249's that do have a tendency to jam are probably decades old. They last forever, the solution of course is build new SAWS. +1 for not changing what's not broke. KEEP the SAW's and give the drums and 100 rnd mags to the other riflemen, I think that would give you more options, having a dedicated machine gun and having the ability to change a rifleman into a more precise machine gunner

I’ve been thinking (if keeps me out of the old folk’s home) of a little different way to do the same thing. Use the back part of the piston as an air pump to force cool air into the action. Like a dual action piston pump. Maybe the bolt can be designed to push this air in front of it and into the open breach.

I do not have enough experience with gas piston firearms to know if this is a workable idea or not.

Should be belt-fed only. Silly to have a support weapon that's box-mag only.
