So, it went bang-ish and left the gun locked up. So, if I put an AL tube down it I can (gently-ish) push the slide back? Two of us tried to open the slide but couldn't by hand.

I am now finally going to listen to the old reload advice: no more in my 1911!

Mea culpa!

Wish I could help you with your problem but I've never experienced that before.

What I'm really wondering is.....Who's dishing out this "no reloads in a 1911" advice?

Did the magazine come out freely? Is the spent case still in the chamber?

If the firearm is safe, make sure the safety is off and give it a few love taps with a rubber mallet to try to manipulate the slide. If it doesn't break free, off to a gunsmith with it.

Take the mag out.

Safety off, but it must already be.

Then rest the spring plug / dust cover on the edge of a bench or something.
(Make sure the barrel bushing isn't hitting the bench.)

And jump on it with both hands.

If you can get a little penetrating oil down into the chamber that might help too.

A dowel down the barrel will prove that it's really an empty casing in there and not a live round. Be certain of that.

Using wood will likely only make things worse if its a "squib" with a bullet stuck in the barrel. Invest in a brass rod as close to the bore diameter as you can find.

He means to check the chamber for presence of an unfired round or squib vs. exited bullet but stuck case; a pencil should work fine for that.

Now, when he goes to tap out that squib, well...we'll see in a few days if he invested in that brass rod, depending on who the daily "X got stuck in my barrel, HELP!" thread is posted by over in Gunsmithing ;)
