Uniforms and Badges

I like to remain anonymous at work and I find the easiest way to do this is to simply wear blue on blue ,or grey on grey Dickies. I've run into people off site that I work W/ that don't even recognize me.

I work inside of a very large chemcial company headquartered in Midland, MI. Note that I said work inside, I'm a contractor doing electrical work, not a company employee.

Anyways, the security at this place is very lax. Simple badges with RFID tags scanned at vehicle gates and turnstyles to get in. Vehicles are inspected randomly and after working inside there for a year, i've been through one vehicle inspection.

I have to say, its very scary thinking about the chemicals they store and produce in that place, and the complacent security protocols. If terrorists wanted to wreak some havoc, they'd have a very easy time of it. A few hardhats and a crappy old van with one stolen badge could get in as many people as they wanted to pack into the van.

Dick Marcinko was the Man because he did things the easy way...everyone expected dudes looking like terrorists to come storming in blazing guns...he walked in to bases in polos and khaki's.

Old Guy.....I can tell you some stories about Tel Aviv!!

Few years ago told my son: "Gotta go someplace you're really not supposed to be, act like you own the place, dare anybody to challenge you!"

I used to contract for a company that shared space with a Federal facility. At one point, my contact gave me the secret for getting around the site quickly; "If the Marines have empty magwells they're just decorative and you can carry a clipboard and look like you belong there. If the mag wells aren't empty, they're serious and you'd better have your paperwork ready."

It worked. He didn't mention the part about when there aren't Marines in a place where you normally see them though. That means they're really serious and are behind something. Expect the papers check to take a while in that case, but nobody complains about things taking longer on those days.

I also worked for a large corporation whose security was lax. To get into the front gate all you needed to do was to flash your name badge to the guard and he would wave you through. A green badge with white lettering of your name about the size of a piece of Wrigley’s spearmint gum. Gee green wrapper with white lettering I do not know how many times others and I used a stick of gum to get into the parking lot cuz we forgot our badges. Then to get into the building all you needed to do was wave your security card in front of the reader at each door, a blue card the size of a credit card. So you fallow a group of folks up from the parking lot, pull out a dark colored credit card and pretend to swipe it as you fallow the group in. (act like you belong)

The company started to pay more attention when a stalker of a young lady did this to gain entrance to the building to confront her. No one was hurt and the law was called. He was jailed for this and other offences. Security tightened after that.

There is an old B movie with Chuck Norris called Invasion USA. In this movie the bad guys cause havoc by dressing up to look like the local law enforcement then did bad stuff to people so when the real law enforcement came to help every one thought they where the bad guys returning to due more harm. So no one knew whom to trust any more.

I have never worried about nuclear war or a major invasion of an enemy force in uniform just a small bunch of men with a mission to cause disruption and civil unrest. Once civil unrest happens we will kill each other out of fear.

sm just wants everyone to think for themselves, pay attention to what is going on around them, and use common sense.

Might as well wish for the moon too...:neener:

I have to wonder why that is so hard for the majority of people I deal with every day.

If only "common sense" were more common...

Just remember when teaching these things to folks to be very paitent and do not assume they know something until you have discussed it with them.

You truly can not have too much paitence.

My dad and brother both work in the telecom business. I don't know how many stories they each have about walking into buildings with a toolbox and test set and never being challenged by anyone. They look like they're there to fix a phone so nobody questions it.

My bro also had a set of AT&T technician magnetic door signs that we'd slap on my white pickup. We could park anywhere we wanted without a worry.

When I'm working I wear a tan 5.11 duty shirt with a "badge", and shoulder patches, with olive green pants, boots, radio w/lapel mic and I drive a white impala with green/gold reflective writing. I can't tell you how many people assume I'm with the Sheriff's Dept.

I never understand sm's posts...
SM has a unique writing style. Read it a couple of times and it will make sense. There is genius behind those words.

You guys make some real good points... It is amazing how vulnerable we as: individuals, society, companies, etc are!

My department routinely sends us to various homeland security classes. Invariably, we typically walk away from the class with a re-affirmed opinion that we are screwed! On the whole our infrastructures in this country are not secured, our security is mediocre, and -- as others have said -- a bit of confidence can get you in a lot of places that you aren't supposed to be in!

mbt2001,

Put me on your ignore list, a feature this forum's software allows one to do, and I will not be cluttering your monitor again.

*smile*

The point of this thread is simple-

I will not be at your gunfight
- Awerbuck

Neither will I or the government.

Everyone defaults to "gun" around here, which is to be expected as THR is firearm forum.
Then folks default to knives or other edged weapons.

I could type VCAs know about NPEs, instead I will type more clearly.

Criminals know about non-weapon areas, and use these areas to target victims and do evil.

It does not matter what gun, how many rounds of the most wonderful ammunition is loaded in that gun, a round in the chamber, the mags topped off and how many spare mags.

You are not going to have that gun in that Non-Firearm environment.

Edged weapons are not allowed either, some allow a small non-locking pocket knife, less than 3" closed, then again some do not even allow this knife, not even a SAK Classic .

Guns and knives are not THE tools in a tool box, or should not be, instead part of the tools in the tool box.

It is too damn easy to fall prey to criminals-
a. Criminals know about uniforms and badges giving a false sense of security.
b Society has allowed themselves to be prey, by the government, and other "governing bodies" [i.e. employer] and set themselves to be easy prey.

Peacocks

One would be wise to pay attention to the Animal Kingdom in regard to Prey and Predator relationships.

Peacocks.
Do a search and in particular, the male peacock.

The male is the one with the huge, beautiful plume strutting around and vying for the female.

Uniform and Badge of being the best male for that female peacock.

Predators know this ritual, and the male is the main target of prey, not the female.
That huge beautiful plume, hinders the male in the ability to use normal defensive means, and therefore makes him a easier target.

Female knows this, actually uses it for her defensive means, as the male attracts - in essence distracts the predator from her.

Female is "using" the male, and not just during this ritual.

It gets back to perceptions I speak about- what perception do you really give off?
What perception do you want to give off?

Good and Evil both use some of the same tools in the tool box to function in society in respective roles.
