Greeting,

I have been reloading since 2 years 125 LRN over 5.1 gr of Unique with no problem. To my dismay, I just saw in Lyman 49th the charge is 3.4 to 4.5!!!! I can swear I got my load from a book or reliable website but I can't recall

The question is:Is 5.1 good or not????

Thank you

I run 4.5gr-5gr with zero problems. I've seen as high as 5.8gr advertised for 124gr jacketed bullets, so pressure at 5.1gr with a hardcast is not an issue. Most of my 9mm pistols will start to have cycling issues below 4gr, so 3.4gr would require a special spring setup for the pistol....

Alliant currently lists 5.8gr Unique for a 124 gr Speer GDHP.

I am curious if anyone has chronographed some 125gr loads and what velocities they got at what loads though? I'd like to make sure to meet 125 power factor, but still keep a nice plinking load.

I just looked it the Lee manual charts (which are just compiled from other sources) and for a 9mm 125 gr lead, using Unique, it lists:

start 5.3 for 1106fps and max of 5.5 for 1139

Lyman tends to go on the low side of things depends on what Lawyer proof read the data.:)

I do not even see a 9mm 125gr lead bullet in Lyman 49th?

Greetings,

I dont' have my Lyman last edition under my hand right now but Lyman Pistol and Revolver 3rd edition P 143 bottom left table has the data I am taling about. This data is the same than the Lyman 49th edition.

Thank you

My Lee and the little blue book of 9mm loads says start at 5.3.

5.3 chrono results: mean of 1108.3
5.0 chrono results: mean of 1075.2

So 4.8 should be right on the money.

ETA: Im unsure of 4.8 because I tried WSF and gave up on Unique

Well either way, There is no 125 gr lead bullet in the main Lyman 49th manual. But to answer your question on 5.1 grs, it is actually less than the start load of 5.3. The .2 grs is not that big a deal, so you should be fine and could go a bit higher if you wanted as the max is 5.5.

Greetings,

Nowhere in the manual it says also it is a compressed load. At 5.1, the bullet compress the powder because it is at about 2-3mm from the top of the case.

I'll check 49th at home. I am almost positive there is the same load than the pistol edition...

Thank you

My Ideal # 38 ( 1951 ) just arrived in to-day's Mail, so I looked up 9mm Luger

125 Grain RNL Bullet #358242 or 123 Grain Conical Lead Ideal Bullet # 356402 -

Unique 6.0 Grains...est 1,300 fps

Seems like things were spunkier back then

The Lyman Pistol & Revolver Third edition shows a 125 grain LEAD bullet load for the 9mm. Unique 3.4 grains, 1004 FPS/ 4.5 grains, 1195 FPS.... Pressure 32,600 C.U.P. It is worth nothing the bullet is not a LRN but rather a odd pointed bullet. It looks like a design that would eat up case capacity.

Runningman, you may have nailed it on the different ranges of Unique charges.

The profile of the bullet nose will determine how deep the bullet is seated inside the case, thereby increasing the chamber pressure and requiring less powder charge.

When in doubt, I always start with the lower "published" load data and work up from there while looking for signs of pressure build up. If the load doesn't cycle the stiff recoil spring Glocks, I increase my charge.
