I want to work up a load for .38 Spl using a 125 gr lead flat point bullet, CCI primers, mixed head stamp cases, and Unique powder. I can't seem to find a starting powder charge. I've e-mailed Alliant and am waiting for a reply. Anybody here have a pet load with these components? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My Lyman 48th edition has a 120g CLRN load
1.450 OAL. Your OAL will differ obviously.

4.0g(start) --> 5.7(max) Unique
725fps ------->1012fps
9,000CUP ----> 16,200CUP

If using the Lyman data, I would probably start 10% below the suggested starting grains.

This is a use at your own risk type of post........

Have fun, be safe..........

Try 6.0 grains to start. That should be a decent beginning charge. I have loaded up to 7.5 grains with a jacketed bullet

You migt want to reconsider that 7.5gr load, Alliant recommends 5.3gr max with a 125gr JHP in the 38spcl. Speer shows 6.0gr max as a +P type load. Likely a safe load in a revolver built for the 357 but it looks to be quite a bit more then I`d want in a 38 loading.

I'd agree with Ol' Joe. I like 6.0 grains behind a 158gr cast bullet, but it is stouter than the average 38spl, well into +p. I shoot it in a Smith L-frame, so I don't envision a problem, but if I was shooting a 38spl gun, I'd dial back that load.

Regards.
