a picture would be best. theres literaly Dozens of various stampings on mosins that no one has ANY IDEA what they were, or why they were added

im personaly stumped as to a PM markings http://www.7.62x54r.com/MosinID/PM86.jpg
local shop had one and before i could get a better look it was sold

Are you sure it's not a square with a slash through it? That's the mark for an arsenal refurb. Almost all ex-snipers will have them.

the mark isnt exclusive to ex snipers. it ( and other rearsenal marks )can be found on almost all common models. it just means the rifle was sent to a army depot or the factory, checked for proper function, broken parts, worn bores etc. it would then have been fixed up via new parts ( electro penciled to match) or possible a new barrel (some mismatched reciever dats and barrel dates have been seen on 91/59's and 91/38s) or counterboreing. the mark means it was either found satisfactory in original state, or fixed up and is now fit for service. doesnt hurt the shootability of the rifle at all. infact probibly makes it better

hmmm i guess that answers my question. My M44 has the split diamond marking on the stock. There are a bunch of other odd stampings on the stock. Theres a M stamped behind the trigger guard and another M just below the inletting for the bayonet. Theres also a circle with what looks like a J in the middle. Theres an A on the bottom of the butt by the slot for the sling as well as a big 2 stamped on the bottom of the stock directly below the rear sights. Anybody have any idea what these mean?

pic

dont be afraid to state the obvious, it might not be obvious to me. its kinda like the pic posted, here is the reciever...

in that pic you can also see the import stamp. does CAI stand for century arms international?

thanks for the help. if there is anything else in the pic worthing noting, tell me. if you guys approve, ill probably post pics in a week or so when the rifle is mine....

I believe that's just a variation on the refurb mark. If your rifle doesn't have the more square version, that would be my guess.

That sounds like Austrian marks:

But those are typically found on M-91's from WWI.

Cosmo: hmm, odd. its a Izhevsk M44 dated 1946. Its not a mutt. All the numbers match. There are some other weird markins on the stock that are to small to really tell what they are. I guess its not a M....its a W..lol

CAI

can anyone tell me if the CAI on the import stamp in the picture stands for century arms international? and if thatd be good or bad...

Correct about CAI. One of my M44's was imported by them. Other was imported by Interordnance.
