I while back I bought another 856 because this one has a pinned front sight and a night sight was cheap. Well, I wasn't satisfied with the carry up timing on one charge hole so I thought I'd peen the corresponding ratchet/lug and refit it. No I didn't call Taurus first but probably should have. The work didn't work out too well, and I set it aside in favor of other things.

A few days ago I found and bought a used 856 cylinder complete, with it's own crane, for 40 bucks. The full swap of cylinder/crane was easy but no good due to the used crane being cut weirdly so I checked the fit of the used extractor with my existing cylinder, and that was not going to work either. Final choice was to use the existing crane from my 856 with the used cylinder as a unit. But all the ratchet/lugs were too long and all would bind on the hand so it could not be cocked for SA nor allow the hammer to drop in DA.

What the heck, I got out one of my small thin square files and fitted each ratchet/lug, one at a time, until the hand properly functioned and it cycled properly. I checked headspace measured at about .065 inch (well within spec). Barrel/cylinder gap is about .003-4 inch. The used cylinder has very little wear but the cheap oxide finish matches the wear level of the revolver. I can't wait to shoot it, first with some wadcutters and then I'll give it a go with full power +P defensive stuff.

Picture or it didn't happen.

Ran some Federal 158 grain LHP standard pressure and some Winchester RA38B +P, no problems. It likes the Winchester pretty well. About 8 yards, DA. I think I will keep it.
