Because basically anything can be used as a weapon, it is impossible to keep weapons away from violent people. But, without going to the extreme of physically removing their hands, we already have an effective method of keeping weapons out of their hands (and, it is the only method that will actually work). We can keep the people away from the weapons... We can keep them in jail.
