Hello all,

I have a Remington 870 and a Mossy 590 that I would like to mount a light to....do any of you know where I could get a light mount for a Surefire or Inova X5 or the like? I saw the ATI stuff, but they require you drill on your furniture, is there anything else out there like a universal pictany rail?

Here ya go...

Streamlight Scorpion mounted on a Rem 870HD with a Tac Star barrel clamp.

I can manipulate the on/off switch with my thumb with the light mounted in this position...not as good as a pressure sensitive switch on the forearm, but it gets the job done for now.

Take a look at the Streamlight accessory rails-

-fits under the magazine cap and positions the light at the front of the forearm.

-clamps around the magazine extension.

I've used these mounts since they first came out and not had any problems with either model. I don't like using a conventional flashlight clamped to the gun, I much prefer a unit that is easily removeable so it can be taken off for daytime practice. I've had no problems with Streamlight M3s or (so far) with Ombu Z-5s, but then I don't abuse them either.

Thanks everyone. Lee, do you know if the mossberg 500 mout will work with a 590? It looks like the bayonet lug would get in the way.

Can I ask a followup here?

Now that we've got the clamps, are there any inexpensive lights that have the corded pressure switch? I've got a few of the LED lights like the Inova, but they either have tailcap or side click switches. Neither of which would be conducive to easy operation...

ceetee ,

Might want to check out DigiLight :

http://www.digilightusa.com/default.asp

Seem to be well made and not as expensive as Streamlight, Surefire, etc.

Don't give up on using a light with a tailcap switch. It can be made to work if the light is mounted on the side of the magazine tube, rather than the bottom. See the picture in my post above.

I can operate mine with my thumb while holding the gun with my hands in their natural position (I do have long arms, however). Give it a try...you might possibly save yourself the cost of a new light.

There is a Mossberg 500 version with a shorter band that goes around the magazine tube, there should be room for it between the forearm and the barrel ring with the bayonet lug on it. Take a look at http://www.streamlight.com/tactical_accessories.htm and give the folks at Streamlight a call at 1-800-523-7488 and see what they say. I don't have a 590 and haven't tried installing one of the brackets on this model.

i just got a surefire and id say dont cheap out. A G2 is about 35$ and is just as good as their other models. im willing to spend the extra bucks and get the brand with the best reputation for reliability for when the SHTF.
no matter what a hard mount to a 12gauge is alot of recoil for any elctrical device to take ( specificly bulbs and batterys bounching around)

+1 on the "not cheap out" thing. You have to realize that the front of a 12 guage is about the worst place you could ever put an incandescant bulb. Yes, you can spend $20 and mount a regular 6P or whatever to the front of your scattergun, but I almost guarantee that your bulb will take a dump on the first shot of heavy buck / slug. Heck, SureFire doesn't even guarantee the bulbs against breakage when used in one of the shock isolated bezel mounts, because it is simply a hard environment for a filament bulb. So, my thoughts on the matter are that you either spring for a SureFire with the shock isolated bezel (I personally have the 918FA on my 870, and it rocks), or you are stuck with low-output (realtive to incandescant) LED bulbs that don't have a filament to break. I just don't think you will be pleased with the outcome of mounting a regualr incandescant to the front of a big recoiling gun like the 12 guage. YMMV.

I do not plan on using any surefire or streamlight flashlights....because of the bulb problem.

The Inova X5 and the bigger one......the X03 are plenty bright enough for room clearing.....the X5 has a wide throw spot and the X03 has a focus that is searing in light and very focused, it'll cut through glass easily.

I was poking around the digilight website (thanks, RKirby!) and I noticed that on many of their incans, they actually have a disclaimer warning the consumer to NOT use them as weapon lights. They also have a decent-looking LED light for around $60 that looks promising; it can be fitted with a remote pressure switch, and they make their own mounting bracket.

I'm slowly changing my opinion of LEDs vs. incans. Keeping in mind that I know next to nothing about flashlight technology, it just seems like LEDs are the future. Heck, they even make LED auto worklights and things now...
