A friend of mine has been dying to go to the indoor range for over a week, and since I have several new purchases I haven't shot yet, we went today. I only took one gun, a .22 target rifle setup I have been putting together for the last few weeks. The range was packed and most everyone was shooting 9mm, .40, .45, so it was peaceful and quiet...perfect for relaxing and adjusting a scope. Well, after getting it sighted in, I was enjoying shooting the centers out of Shoot-N-C stickers and was writing my name on a piece of paper at the far end of the range.

Now, I'm sure everyone has noticed the slight concussion you feel when someone in the next lane pulls out a .45 or magnum of some sort...you just feel it mildly when they fire a shot, no big deal. Well, today someone four ((4)) lanes away from me fired their new S&W 500 with a 4" barrel. Well, my own heartbeat was moving my crosshairs enough to change point of impact a quarter inch, but this thing was unreal!!! I had at least 3 shots where the impact of his shots hit me just as my trigger broke...point of impact off by like 2 inches.

Holy ****!!! You wouldn't even have to shoot an attacker with one of those things...you would only need to shoot in his general direction and I swear, he will be checking himself for holes!!! I couldn't imagine the concussion if one of those cannons was fired in my direction. I enjoy shooting off a few rounds of .41 magnum every once in a while when the range is quiet just to see everyone peek around the dividers...but this thing is absolutely unreal. I watched the guy shoot, and my 12 guage with a pistol grip doesn't kick as high as this thing...it would scare a 12 guage to death! Gonna have to get one of those in case I want to go dinosaur hunting.

I'm not sure that shooting the .500 Magnum would be something I'd care to do with any frequency.

I had the chance to shoot a couple of them without having to pay for the ammunition, including a 4" model.

The felt recoil was something. The muzzle blast was incredible.

Pulling off fast double & triple taps at 10 yards was doable, but certainly not something I'd care to do very often.

I looked at some digital video later and was able to see the recoil impulse 'shock wave' travel up my forearm to my upper arm and then into my shoulder. Not sure that would be a good thing to subject myself to frequently.

Shooting a 360PD Airlite J-frame with full power .357 Magnum ammunition hurt my hand worse, though. That's one of the reasons I mostly carry .38 Spl +P ammunition in my MP340 Centennial, although I use a mix of Magnum, +P and standard pressure .38 Spl loads for training & qualifications.

I have a 500 as well, but only pictures so far of my 460, just about the same (if not more) concussion.

Blew the hat off the guy next to me. Blew a water bottle in half (no joke, decapitated that mother) from the cylinder gap on the table 6" away. Broke my reloading boxes all over the place, I had put a cheeseburger about a foot and a half off to the left that ended up all over my forehead. Un-freakin-real!

Here is a few pics of the blast...

Sorry if you have seen them before, posted a billion times, but they still make me smile everytime!

Big Boomer,

That's one heckuva fireball! Bet the cheeseburger was done when you got through shooting.

From the size of the ball of flame, I'll bet you could reduce the powder charge by 50% and still get the same velocity.

That's a gen-u-ine HHH (Hand Held Howitzer). :D

I've seen a good half dozen of these sold on the local swap n sell with the note that they were fired only a few times. IMHO it's not a very practical firearm. Not too fun either unless you're into ballistic abuse. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some PI claims from internal bleeding ;-)

I'd imagine the concussion from one of those .45-70 derringers is "intense" :)

I was in an indoor range a couple of years back, shooting my Single-Six.

Suddenly, a blast slammed over me like a tidal wave.....Ceiling tiles were flopping....lights all over town dimmed..

Rangemaster said guy was shooting a .460. WAAAAAAY more gun than I want.

That looks like it's coming out the cylinder. Yeow, that much blast just from the gap? I'd be afraid of losing all the hair on my hands just shooting that!

Once you stand behind someone firing a Barrett .50, you'll not be eaisily impressed, again:D

Brother I feel your pain!

HighVelocity here on THR let me shoot his once. I wondered what the grin on his face was for :)

*heheheh* the RO at the local indoor range let me fire my Mosin Nagant M44 one time. ONE time. The range was otherwise empty, and he was curious what the fireball out the muzzle would be like with the combination of carbine and large cartridge. I plugged and muffed, headed out there, and he was just wearing muffs, standing behind me. He said his ears were ringing for about an hour. The concussion knocked about a years worth of dust from the baffles above the shooting bench. Some of the LE guys from the other range deck (separated by heavy concrete wall) came over to find out who had set off a flash-bang.

You want concussion? Go find somebody who has an old Ruger Blackhawk chambered for the .30 carbine round. It will redefine the term.
Use plugs and muffs.

I've got one of those. It's great for clearing out the range if people start crowding you. :) I'm fixin' to work up some maximum loads using Blue Dot -- see how close I can get to 2000 fps (with a 100 grain bullet) before the primers fall out. (Power Pistol is probably a better choice for this exercise, but I have Blue Dot already)

I had a guy at the range shooting .500 on day. It was funny though. He started shooting a .357 (which holds 6 rounds) and then moved to his .500 which only holds 5 rounds.

We all sat back and watched him each time cock that .500 back to shoot that 6th round that didn't exist and laugh our butts off at the amount of flinch he was suffering.

Ya, a guy was shooting one at 100 yards on the bench next to me. I had to get up and wait for him to finish. I don't even know why he was there. The range only went to 100 yards and with a gun like that you could probably afford a club membership to a nicer longer range.

At the local indoor range they allow centerfire rifle so I've made some folks unhappy with my Krebs AK-103K, PTR-91, or M1A. The Krebs with the '74 brake really has some concussion indoors! Luckily for my fellow shooters, I've only brought them in there to sight in at 25.
