I agree with armoredman. I always assume that most manufacturers rely on great conceptual ideas too much and forget to keep their gun from being butt-ugly. Greatness is reserved for the few that nail it the first time, like the AK or the 1911.
 
I've read somewhere that this approach was tried decades ago, and faded from view. Keep in mind the only reason for doing this: it puts a near-standard length barrel on a compact pistol. How important is that to you? And while you are at it, count the monkey motion parts, the ones that have not stood the test of time. No thanks.
