So, politics as usual is still operating in D.C. and people are rolling in anti-gun legislation. Anyone who gets mail from the NRA-ILA will probably be familiar with these but for those who don't, or who haven't written their representatives yet, here's a heads up. I am sure some of these bills "come up every year" but the only way we keep them from passing it to keep objecting to them every year!

The text of these bills can be looked up here: http://thomas.loc.gov/home/c111query.html

First is legislation to "close" the gun show "loophole". I think I gave up on reading when the bill cited the Brady campaign... S843 and HR2324

Second is a bill to require Federal licensing, fingerprinting and testing of all firearm owners. HR45

Next up is a bill to restrict semiautomatic "assault" rifles and "large" capacity magazines to those over 21. HR257

Another bill would prevent anyone on the "terrorist" watch list from buying a gun. Of course, no one has any control over who the government puts on this list or why and there is no way to appeal placement on the list. HR2159 and S1317

Last, but certainly not least is a plan to create a national registry of gun owners by keeping firearm sale records from being destroyed. S2820

Time to start getting those emails out guys!

hr45 the "Blair holt bill" died last year
and s2820 is unlikely to pass due to percieved violations of ammedments 4,5,10 and 14?
I am no legal scholar, lawyer or played one on TV. BFWIW 4,5and 10 look possible and there is a supposed conflict with current ATF regs on prohibition of a gun owners list, I was unable to find them.

Sorry, but that doesn't constitute enough of a plan of action. Where are the pressure points on these? What examples of letters are there opposing these? We need a lot more for this to qualify for an Activism thread instead of an AD thread.

The sickest thing about the terrorist watch list is our Democratic congressmen consider our soldiers returning from war and getting out of the service as"People of Conscern", but not some Iranian who wants to take flying lessons, because that would be racial profiling.:cuss:

Ok please excuse my ignorance, it's been bantered around alot, and I just don't pay attention to what rolls out of the mouths of the HCI crowd, life is just too short. But what is a gun show loophole? At all the gunshows, the licensed dealers, are making background checks. As far as i know, here, you have to be a licensed ffl dealer, and comply with all the laws to trade weapons. Now, a few individuals do walk around with personal weapons for sale, but you see that in the newspaper, everyday, anyways. Its not like, one guy, walking around trying to sell his lever action rifle is in any way part of the crime problem. Some of the relic dealers sell their black powder stuff without a license, but there hasn't been a cap n ball used in a drive by, since the days of Jessie James.

Re: HR45 (Blair Holt Bill) - Rep. Bobby Rush of Chicago has promised to introduce this bill every session until it passes. This session, it managed to attract one co-sponsor, which is one more than its previous outings. However, it was, as it has been every time, referred to committee where it will most likely die.

HR 2324 (Gun Show Loophole Closing Act of 2009) has more co-sponsors, but still not enough to move it beyond the committee to which it was referred in June.

What seems to be forgotten is that not only are there many Republicans opposed to these measures, there is a significant group of Democrats opposed, as well. It is this latter group that shot down the introduction of legislation to renew the Assault Weapons Ban in the early days of the Obama Administration.

But what is a gun show loophole?

You pretty much figured it out. There is no "loophole", just people obeying the law as it's written. But, it doesn't get as much attention if they say "People obeying the law selling guns legally, the same laws we've had since 1968".

I wonder if someone drove under the speed limit they would call it the "Highway Loophole".

Smoke and mirrors.

Pushing Public Fear

From what I've been told by a family member of a NY politician, who is pro 2ND AMD, The Plan is to use the fear of public shootings for the next campaign of anti gun laws. She mentioned that the only way to get an anti gun law to pass is to use the fear factor. i.e young mothers and their children being gunned down at mall's while christmas shopping or playing at the park.
I guess it's really going to be a shock & awe campaign.
I've held a few Tea Party meeting at my house, spent close to $200.00 on postage stamps, envelopes and form letters for people to sign so I could mail them off to our senators Leahy and Sanders.
We have received a few "thank you for your concern" letters and that's about it.

We are correct to monitor this and keep on our reps, but I strongly doubt that any of these laws will make it out of committee. This election is a scorching battle, the last thing they need is more of the same sentiment that got them hammered in '94.

Pretty much this. Our gun ownership rights have increased substantially over the past year or so, but it doesn't bring in much money to suggest that there no big threats around right now. If anything, I expect gun control laws to get more lax over the next couple of years.

It certainly different than from before the elections when there was constant horror stories that we would all be totally disarmed by now and forced to work in socialised work camps.

Since nothing happened on these items specifically I'm going to close this thread. If something new comes up please feel free to start another.

Thanks
