I'm watching this travesty unfold in New Town CT and obsessing about how this can be prevented in the future. My solution is this and I have already offered my services to the local police department. I suggest a volunteer corp made up of veterans, combat preferrably, to volunteer one day a week each, without pay, to guard our schools either with lethal or non-lethal weapons, in daily groups of 2 or more and to likewise cover all afterhours functions at these locations. They are to be given communication devices to directly contact the local police and cartblanche for their actions upto but not including lethal means. Lethal means only to be used against a 100% known lethal threat. If you like the idea, then make the call to your local law enforcement agency now!
 
I hope this isn't a "IBL" post, but how about simply giving the teachers who would be willing participants training and a Ruger?

A decently trained ( Somewhat smart & Logical ) teacher armed with a CWP could have prevented this garbage in the parking lot. Way before he/she made it to the classrooms.
 
Sadly, these incidents will continue to happen, and will most likely escalate, until we have a better system for diagnosing and treating mental illness. There will always be a push to "cure" the symptoms (eliminate guns, more laws for things that are already illegal, armed guards to shoot the shooter first) rather than fix the base nature of the problem...and I fear mental illness is more a product of our culture than anything, and is only becoming more common.

Guns are either going to become illegal as they are demonized as the enabling instrument for people to commit deadly crimes, or people will realize that we need to find out what causes people to go crazy in such a massive and public manner, and work on solving the problem from the source.

People have always been crazy... guns have been around a long time....why is it just now there seem to be so many of these public shootings? Enhanced media coverage?

Require everyone who is legal and able to carry, period. Even if all guns were banned, some nut job would use a meat cleaver or hatchet or knife. Don't believe? Do some research at a global level...

If everyone was required to carry, the BG would have gotten one or two individuals before being neutralized. Actually, if everyone was required to carry, that in itself would have been a deterrent for the BG.

These so-called "gun free" zones are deathtraps to the unarmed law abiding citizen and an opportunity for these crazies. Yea, yeah - preaching to the choir... :banghead:
 
Give armed combat veterans carte blanche to defend schools?

Require people to be armed?

Apparently knee-jerk reactions to tragedies such as this aren't the exclusive domain of proponents of gun control.
