Fixed at 17-power. To be mated with a Rem700 .308. Purpose LR shooting mostly 300 - 900m, some 100 maybe.

Good scope/rifle combination? I'm trying, trying hard, to not cheap out on a scope.

I've used a 6-24x from 25-300m and 300-900m, and at 300m even 24x is decent, at 100m it takes way too long to find the target though. But I'm thinking 17x could be a good compromise, since it'd be much faster than 24x at 100m, and I don't plan to shoot at 100m much anyway. Sound logic?

At around 600m and so I've found that 10x can be nice, sometimes preferable to more magnification, but I'm thinking sometimes targets won't be the size of doors and marked on clearly contrasting paper, so maybe 17x would beat 10x, fixed power, for all-around LR use.

A lot of people like the 17X vs the 10x for LR shooting. But at short range, the field of view can be frustrating if you are shooting in tactical or sniper competitions and under a time constraint. I picked the 10x for the same reason the Army and USMC originally did - it's a good compromise. If I was strictly doing LR shooting and operating in full light, a 17X would be fine.

Keep in mind that a 17x with a 42mm objective only has an exit pupil of 2.4 making it pretty much a full daylight scope only. At 10x, the same objective is suitable for much less ambient light. If you're an old guy like me, the best you pupil can do is probably under 5mm, so it may not matter.

also note that the st17 is a very large heavy scope. if im not mistaken the st17 is longer than even the schmidt bender pm2 5-25. if you are set on a us optics i would wait around for a sn3 group buy. it wouldn't be that much more than a st17 and you get one of the nicest variables known to man.
