...well shocking to me at least. Now as I understand it, USA TODAY is one of the MSM antigun heavyweights. As recently as last month they have called for the renewal of the AWB, closing the gun show "loophole", and improving the NCIS system as ways to prevent future large scale shootings like VT. There is an often used antigun quote from them although I can't recall it at the moment.

So anyway.........

I open up my copy this morning (I know, I know why do I subscribe to an antigun paper, I can't help it, it was a birthday gift and I do like to read it everyday) and what do I see but an ad for Henry rifles:what:

I had to look three or four times to make sure I wasn't reading one of my gun rags. I don't know how often they advertise firearms manufacturers but I have never seen one in any MSM publication (Time, Newsweek, WSJ, USA TODAY, etc.) ever. I was very surprised and confused.

It's probably not as big a deal as I am making it out to be but USA TODAY is an avowed antigun entity, to the best of my knowledge, and here they are with an advertisement for firearms.

Any ideas on what's up with that? :scrutiny:

1. All major market newspapers are suffering declining circulation.
1a. Declining circulation means declining ad revenue.

2. Most of Henry's line-up is pretty PC-looking. It's all leverguns and bolt-action rimfires. The closest item they sell to non-PC by looks is the take down survival .22.

(And was the survival .22 even on the ad?)

Yep...just double-checked the ad, the Survival rifle is shown and mentioned. And granted, an ad for Henry is not like an ad for Glock or Bushmaster, but that misses the point.

Why is USA TODAY running ads for firearms?

Money talks. Principals can quickly take a back seat went the bottomline is on the line.

Since liberals have few principles they really care about that much (except maybe unrestricted abortion) it is not surprising that money talks.

Back when I lived in Virginia, there was a radio station in Virginia Beach (where PETA has its headquarters.) There was a talk show host who regularly pointed out the stupidity of PETA. But PETA ran ads on that same station.

Someone called in and asked why the station would accept such ads. The host said, "We're whores.":p

Henry?

Well, then, Marlin should take a whack at that.

Their stuff is largely lever/bolt rifles.

Even their autoloaders are pretty tame looking.

To my knowledge they don't do a pistol at all.

Savage is pretty much a long-gun-only outfit, maybe they should join that fray.

I'm tentatively encouraged.

I have seen Ruger advert in National Review and that is about it. I have even written letters to Berreta, CZ, Ruger, SA, SW, etc urging them to advert in mags like NR, Week Stan, Mil Off, Am Ent, Leatherneck etc. Nary a peep. Doesn't it seem like a natural to advert to presumably wealthy 2A friendly conservatives? What a bunch of freakin' citified girlie-men. It would shame Jefferson, Washington, etc to learn of the divergence of wealth, firepower, and realistic thinking. I sometimes think that Bin Laden betting on the US as the 'weak horse' might be the right bet. Maybe the US shot its wad with Truman and the others that were 'Present at the Creation'.

Perhaps we should write letters/e-mail to USA Today and Henry praising them for this decision?? I can assure you that some of the Brady's are already writing to complain. The same way the "animal lovers" in my area always write in to the paper to complain any time a hunting story is published in the newspaper....

This is a good thing. Are there any studies/surveys that back up this claim?
Sure there are. You can find them on the...........wait for it...........INTERNET.
The internet has demolished subscription revenues of newspapers. We canceled our daily Orlando Slantinel because it mainly went in the recycle bin.
Now we just get Sundays with the coupons for my wife. "Look honey, 20% off at Linens N Things" "Wow, there doesn't happen to be a 20% coupon for Gander Mountain or Bass Pro, does there?" in my most bored voice.
Besides, who wants day old news that's so one sided, it makes you sick? I do like the fishing forecast though, which I read online of course.

I gave up on The Columbus Dispatch after they came out against concealed carry and for the renewal of the AWB. I let them know why I'm no longer interested in their paper every time they call me up asking me to resubscribe.:neener:

It’s only a matter of time. Somebody will point the phrase Golden Boy some liberal gets pissed and the whole thing will go to ell.

I'll bet they won't print an add for kel-tec sub2000 folding 9mm rifle. fits in a briefcase and can take 30rd clip. real ugly black gun

you can google newspaper circulation with the papers name, and the numbers can be seen to go downhill practically while you watch.or,just google newspaper circulation figures.

The only good thing you can do with the USA Today is clean windows or wrap fish!
While the weather forcast is OK! :)

Since noone reads the lies printed in MSM papers anymore they will take any ad revenue they can get.

Ok, I will add USA Today in the anti 2nd pile. There are so many anit 2nd networks and publictions I can't remember all of them. Being pro 2nd is a lot of work now-a-days.

I'm astonished at what an ad like that costs. I wonder what it means for Henry... They're throwing down a lot of cash on that ad, trying to increase their customer base, and I have to wonder if USA Today is a prudent vehicle. Are they doing really well, or really poorly?

Maybe the major newspapers would consider making their agenda reflect the advertising they accept. It's pretty hard to say, in one breath, "ban all guns" (or similar) while in the next saying "buy this gun".

In an earlier time (some would say a better one, too) such an inability to stick to one's scruples would be more ruinous than anything else. "I may not respect your opinion, but I respect your freedom to have one" and all. What good is your opinion if you can't stand for it?

A good explanation is that large national and international papers have alternative versions printed for different markets. For example,a New York Times edition in sold in New York City will have different advertising and local news than a edition sold in Boston. Large circulation papers have been doing that for years. I have never read a USA Today so I don't know if they print different version for different markets, but I would guess they would have too.
