And it doesn't seem to do anything different. I'm a bit confused. I deprimed the 30-06 using the universal deprimer tool, no problems, and then I try using the full length sizer die I got in the lee deluxe set and the brass looks exactly the same. Isn't it supposed to be flared open, or something different? I feel like I'm missing something very basic.

The universal die just knocks the old primer out.
It doesn't do anything else to the case.

The Sizing die returns the fired case to factory dimensions again.
In other words, it resizes it.

It's nothing you can see with the uncalibrated eyeball.

However, if you take a case out of the universal depriming die and put a bullet in the case neck?
It will fall in.

Out of the sizing die, it won't fit until you seat it, kicking & screaming, with the seating die.

Dies for bottle necked cartridges normally are sized, full or neck makes no difference, and the neck is opened to the correct diameter when the decapping assembly is pulled back through the neck.

Is there a special reason you're using the universal decapper? Perhaps to tumble clean after removing the primers?

Are you not using the decapping assembly in your sizing die? You should be able to remove the pin and still use the assembly to open the neck.

The dimensional difference between a fired case and a resized case is a few thousandths of an inch, but as rc said, it's all the difference you need.

Because I only got the 3006 set today and I had thr die sitting around. I also dont have a tumbler .

Thats good to know.

As mentioned above, use the resizing die with the decapping assembly. No reason to use the universal decapper, at least not yet.

Well looks like I'm doing things correctly after checking with the bullet test. Thanks guys I feel a lot better now and its a nice way to know I'm doing things right. Crazy how unoticable the difference is to the naked eye.

Now on to priming...pray for me.

I use my Lee decapping die to prep brass for cleaning. This way I don't have to lube each case (bottle neck cases) just to decap. All of my brass gets cleaned between decapping and resizing.

Yeah, but then you need to be sure there's no cleaning media in the flash hole. I'd rather have the decapper push it out. Unless you're wet tumbling with stainless steel pins.

I use the universal decapping die because I shot a lot of black powder. Take a spent case out decap and into soapy water till I get home and can dry it them tumble. Adds time to the brass. The Universal's advantage is removing spent primers with out having clean brass and in many cases no need to lube. It doesn't replace the standard resizing die at all.

I don't see the issue. Once the case is cleaned the decapping pin in your sizing die will pop out any media left (other than Stainless).

I use Stainless pin media. It works too nice.
