I have a revolver I don't really need and I'm considering trading it for a Browning Buckmark - if I can find someone interested in a trade. (I say that knowing I could sell my piece and buy a Buckmark - but from what I can tell online the values seem roughly comparable. So if a trade was convenient it might be simple.)

Anyway - do people have inputs on getting a semi-auto like that from a private individual at a show? Am I crazy? Or am I too cautious? If I was looking to get a revolver I'd be much less concerned.

I don't own a Buckmark and I know very little about them. I do know it would be nice to have a .22, I love Brownings, and with the threads I've read people seem to like them. I'm not particularly interested in purchasing new - although it's not out of the question.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

If you could find an even trade for a BM, it would be simple and convenient. You don't specify what make/model of revolver you have, but it's possible you'd actually take a bit of a hit on an even swap. [EDIT: At least at today's prices.]

You'll also find that the price on a new BM will be not much more than used. A small enough difference for many to just go new, unless you find an older or hard to find one with specific features. Not to mention people tend to hold on to a perfectly functioning BM. Barrels are generally easily swappable between models; grips maybe not so much.

Thanks. I sort of thought I might take a hit on an even trade, from what I found online.

I have a S&W 14-2 4" .38 Spcl. I'll confirm price of new. That would be cool to do.

Thx.

You might want to go to S&Ws website and see what a new model 14 fetches. Unless yours is in pretty sad condition you would be taking a major hit. Put a BuckMark on layaway and pay it out if necessary, but I wouldn't make a straight across trade.;)a

If you price it from Browning's site, take about 20% off MSRP.

I can generally find a Camper for $299.99 all day long. I bought a Standard for $369 plus tax and a Hunter for $389 plus tax.

Didn't find more than $20 difference wherever I looked locally.

Prices used to be better - but you waited about 3 or 4 years too late. I did, too.

[EDIT: Didn't see a 4" model 14 on S&W website, but 6" is listing at $900 to $1100 MSRP. So yeah - definitely what CZ57 said.]

I screwed up in my earlier reply. It's a Model 15 with a 4" barrel. (The Model 14 is the one I'm keeping. :))

So what is a good way to value it? Is gunbroker or gunsamerica a reasonable reference point? I assume so. Would those prices be comparable to what I could get at a show? And also, any rules of thumb for what a shop might offer in trade-in? In the car world there is the concept of Avg Trade-In and Avg Retail. Any way to translate or rough guidelines for how that falls out in the gun industry?

Thanks.

Gunsamerica and the like should be ballpark - maybe a little high sometimes. Just be sure to factor in that the condition of the guns vary greatly.

I don't have a lot of experience with selling at a gunshow or gun shop, so somebody else would need to chime in on that. I've seen people with signs at gunshows trying to sell something. I would say make a good sign and don't short yourself, but at the same time don't price it like it's somebody's dream gun. It is, but that person might not necessarily be at that show that day.

Whatever you do, don't take it to a pawn shop.
