Im looking at either a used High Standard 101 (approx. 4 inch) that looks to be in real good shape or a new Ruger MkIII 22/45 with the bull barrel. It will be used for target practice and both are 250 dollars. My friend has a Ruger that I like and I have never shot a High Standard, but I always heard that they were excellent guns. What do you guys think?

I'd get the HS before I bought a MKIII 22/45.

Now, if it were an all stainless MKII (not 22/45)...that would be a different story.

IMHO, of course...

Check into the availability of High Standard mags, some can be quite hard to find. Unless it comes with all the mags you'll want this could be a major issue.

I'd buy a good original High Standard for $250 without batting an eye for my collection, but the potential magazine issues make me say the Ruger is a better choice for shooting a lot.

I like the looks of the MKII better than the 22/45 but the 22/45 fits me better, thus I shoot a little better with it.

If its the "new" High Standard from the reborn company, I'd be careful, as I've heard mixed results about them so far.

If a true 101 model and all original I would get the HS. I've never been one to need a large stack of magazines so find a couple, make sure they are factory, and there are detailed articles on how to tune them to work perfectly.
Though the Ruger is a good gun and parts are common for them there is something about shooting a classic from back in the day when workmanship was done by true craftsmen not just punched out on a machine. I had 1 Ruger and now have 3 HS so I am biased.

If the 101 is a Supermatic, Sport King or anything else except a Duramatic and is in good shape, you won't be sorry if you go with it. Just one pull of the trigger and you'll know why.
The High Standards of the 1950's were not just assembled, they were "fitted".
