What is everyones opinion on what a good condition used Marlin lever action 30-30 should fetch on average? Taxes are comming back soon and I'm going to be haunting the local pawn shops looking for new aquisitions.

Thanks!

Obviously something of more recent manufacture. I'm looking for something to shoot, not a collectors item.

Sorry I guess I should have ben more specific in my request!

I'd figure $200 for one with a good deal of "honest wear" to $400 for a nice straight grip. Maybe a tad more for a stainless/walnut gun.

They've made different grades of wood over the years, including recent guns. Also, some are branded "Glenfield".

That was my point about them making them since the 1890s. There are many variants out there. Checkered or not, different woods, different barrel/mag lengths, safety or no, etc. Some old guns aren't worth anything extra. Some really are.

Unlike Winchester, though, AFAIK there aren't junk 336s out there. Winchester put out some GREAT 94s and some that I wouldn't ever want. Depends on when they were made. Marlins are all fine (unless the owner did something not-so-good with the thing).

Dittos re: the 94, which I love and ownership of which is a family tradition. Sadly, some really crummy ones came out under that name. I'm not referring to some of the no-frills "Rangers" and so forth, that's a matter of stockwood and detail, and I actually love my Olin-era 94. But I've seen some REALLY embarassing objects out there over the years. One from the mid 1970s had some sort of black painted-on finish; I used to know the name, I looked into it out of morbid curiosity. Sort of spalded and flaked off. Others had what looked like wierd little stamped pieces of tin inside instead of steel parts. Mine isn't one of the vintage classics, and I'm not foolish enough to say it is, but by God, some embarassing examples were allowed to escape into the world. And I'm saying that about a firearm I love. Marlin offered cheapo guns through merchandisers, and I've even had one years ago, but I've never seen a truly crummy one. I'm a Winchester man, but it takes an eye. Marlin is a little easier.

Typically the down-market versions have cheap stained hardwood, maybe with tacky pressed checkering in a too-fancy pattern for what they are, and the steel isn't highly polished. The guns still work the same.:)

Hell, the ones with the roughest finish are probably finished and blued better than 80% of what Remington sells today as "high-end." But that's true for a lot of older guns.

A regular pistol grip, fairly used Marlin 336C blued with walnut stock goes at about 220-250 around here (Western WA)

Someone may ask more but this is the prevailing fair price.

Seems counterintuitive but actually newer used 336 may be cheaper than older ones prior the introduction of the safety.

If I'm not mistaken (the expert please correct me if i'm wrong), the "golden" trigger (pre-safety) commands more...mine is one of them.

Expect to pay more for longer barrels, straight grip, stainles steel.

Cheaper Glenfield versions go for around $200

I got a 1969 Marlin 336 that is at 98% blueing and about 99% american walnut stocks for $260 otd at a local pawnshop. Good deals on 336's can be had, mine looks as if it was shot maybe 50 times or less when I got it.

I just picked up a 336w with a scope (cheap 3x9 $50 Simmons) and nice sling for $275.

The guy said it has been shot about 40 times and it looks like a brand new rifle.

I also caught a deal on a nice 1968 or so model Winchester 94 for $180 about 4 months ago at a local show.

Lever rifles are VERY abundant here in TN and I see alot of them for sale locally.

My 336C, here in Western Wa, is a "gold" trigger (no safety) 1971 in very very good conditions, I got it with a sling and a cheap 3-9X 40 Simmons scope for $225 at a gun shop almost 2 years ago.

Someone told me that it could increase in value because is one of the rare 336 that has the ramp front sight with no hood (there is not even a groove for one)

They built them like that only for 3 years then they resumed the front hood (that many remove anyway)

I called Marlin and they confirmed...however I don't know if it's sufficient to give it a particular high value in the future and frankly I don't care.

The pawn shops here are nuts. I looked at several 336s last week. the cheapest was $279. It looked like it had lived its life on the bottom of A boat. Another was decent at best for $379. They still have them.

A run of the mill pre-crossbolt 336 around here will run $200-250 depending on condition...

Thanks guys, 200-300 was what I suspected and about what I am willing to pay for one.

I just sold a Winchester Ranger for $425. I ran an add in the paper and sold it quick. It was in 'almost" new shape. I'm not just saying that it really was, not a blemish on the stock or blue. I personally only thought it was worth about $300, but I took a chance and got it. Another obscene profiteering story I know......sue me.

FYI, if you get a 336 with the crossbolt safety (or most other Marlin levers for that matter), there is at least one kit out there that eliminates the safety, and it's under $20 last time I checked.

Wow...Guess I live in the wrong part of the country. I have been looking for a good used 336 for awhile now and I have not seen many under $400. I saw a SS one recently that was only $30 less than a NEW one.

Good heads up on finding one with the cross bolt safety.

The 336SS is relatively rare, and they tend to be in good condition, since there's no metal that scratches easily.

Blue ones are a lot cheaper.

i see them all the time gun show special 325.00 with a cheap scope on it. i haggle with the dealers tell them to keep the scope and walk out between 225.00 and 400.00 depending on model condition and caliber. I also find them in the paper for 150.00 to 175.00.

I just won an auction on a really clean 336 with Leupold bases and rings, trigger exstension, and sling swivels, pre safety 1981 vintage for $265.00.
I thought that was a very good deal.
