Looking at some of the new crop of Eurpoean police-trade in Sigs, like the P225 and P228, I'm wondering if these are really as big as they seem on paper. The P225 is 1.3"; the P228 is a full 1.5". Are those measurements across the slide or at their widest point? If widest point, what is that - the grips? I thought Springer XDs were thick, but according to strictly numbers, the Sig is fatter - the 228 almost a half-inch! Can anyone confirm that?

Also, what is the consensus for these as a range gun and CCW weapon? I know they are all steel/alloy and will be heavier than a XD or M&P. But are they managable? How would you compare carry-ability to an officer 1911 which is relatively flat, but relatively heavy - esp with 7 rounds?

The P238 is the little .380 based on the old Golt Mustang design. It is not a police trade in.

I think you may mean the P228, which was the predecessor to the 229. It is a double stack 9mm.

They are not compact guns? Not like a G26.

Bigger than the G19 on the belt IMHO but they are both some of the best that Sig has to offer. In the P Series guns I love the P228, P220, P226 and P225.

To me the P228 is the perfect combination of size, capacity, combat accuracy and reliability. I carry mine with 17+1 mecgar mags. Feeds 100%. Simply a perfectly balanced easy shooting reliable gun. The P225 is right there but its single stack. Some people need a single so it is a great gun for those with smaller hands.

They are what built the Sig rep along with the P230 series of guns.

Check one out in person. If you cannot find a P228 check out the P229 in 9mm it is almost identical in size.

The ergos on the Sig are great. I prefer them to the CZ. I own a P01, have owned as cz75, cz Compact, CZ P40 you get the picture. I want a CZ shadow but I got a 1911 in 9mm instead.

I have to p6/225s and one p228. Wish I had some end of year cash to pick up another. Individual preferences vary, but I find the six p22x line to fit my hand perfectly. The p6 is now one of my favorite CCW items, followed by the 228/229.

I have a CZ-75 as well, and find both the Sigs and the CZs to be the best ergonomic fits, at least for me.

For range, competition (IDPA) and CCW, I've become pretty stuck on Sigs. My p6s are both very, very accurate. The only think I'll probably change is replacing the black sights with Sig bar-dot sights. Ditto with the 228 (which has dead night sights).

I have owned a 228 and currently own a p6/225.

I found the 228 to be thick, thicker then a PCR I had also. For some reason, mainly between my ears I could not shoot the 228 and gave up on it. I found a p6 some time back and fell in love with it.... serious love. It is a late 80s W. German Police trade in, condition is good+. Not much wear on the internals at all. Rifling is crisp and sharp. Sights are black stock and somewhat blow, will be swapped for nights soon. It cost me $280 or something like that with a case and two mags.

It is extremely accurate, dead reliable and easy to carry when I could. I had to swap out a mainspring to lower the 24# DA trigger pull to 19#, but that only toom $6 and a few minutes. Other issues... can not find new grips less then the cost of a BMW nor mags under $40. But I have 4 mags now and feel that is sufficient. It is a little large by todays standards, but it is a better combat pistol then say a PT9 or a some other small 9mm semi.

I use it in IDPA matches and love it. Never failed... or even hiccuped. Eats all FMJ and HP I have put into it. It is much more accurate with 124g then with 115s or 147s... which sucks because I have a crate of 147s sitting around.

Compared to a CZ.... I prefer my 85 for range, but the P6 is prefereable to the PCR for CC or informal combat comp.
