I stopped by a new store on the way to the range today and noticed a used, blue 4" Taurus 65 .357 for $175. This store's really out in the sticks of MD, I was absolutely shocked at the (relatively) low prices, the old dudes running the shop definitely arent trying to buy an island with their proceeds.

Cylinder didnt wiggle side to side for what I could tell, but that was all of Jim March's checkout I could remember. DA and SA were smooth, not glass-rod-snapping like my friend's Model 29, but definitely respectable.

There was one thing that struck me as odd, there was a definite ring around the outside of the cylinder where the locking pawl has rubbed the blueing down to the bare metal. Is that something to be concerned about? I didnt notice much other bluing wear besides that, no glaring evidence of holster wear, etc.

Assuming it passes Jim's check list, is $175 a decent deal? I've been in the market for a .357 revolver, but this was my first time seriously looking at them in the store (mainly due to insane prices at most other MD gun stores).

No

This happens on all revolvers. You can get a gunsmith to tune the gun to reduce this ring but it will happen. Just means the gun has been shot. It's not as noticeable on stainless guns, but it's there.

As for the price, it seems like a decent deal. If I liked the gun, I'd be inclined to go for it IF it passes the revolver checkout. I have experience with about a half dozen Taurus revolvers and they've all been pretty good. Not quite as nice as the comparable S&W, but most times the measure up admirably.

Thanks for the info, my buddies only have stainless revolvers, so I'd never noticed the ring before.

I've had my Model 65 for over 10 years and the cylinder ring isn't anything close to what you describe. It has a lifetime warranty so if you had to replace the cylinder that should not be a problem. $175 is a fair price if everything else checks out.

For the apparent use factor . not too bad a deal but - could be that $150 would be more realistic. I am going by the degree of cylinder bolt drag wear you refer to. If tho lock-up is good and it seems timed on each station then probably worth consideration.
