i wanted to know whether the used WASR 10s differ very much from new ones when it comes to quality

It's kind of good to buy it used because you can inspect it and see whether it has problems or not. It's not like all of them had problems in a certain year or anything... for all years most of them are good to go. The problems are pretty easy to notice with a little inspection... you want to mostly look for a canted gas block and an oversized mag well that lets mags rattle (all AK mags have a little wobble, but some WASR's were really bad). If it doesn't have these problems, buy with confidence. They are pretty hard rifles to wear out, so there isn't much downside to buying used.

What henschman said.

However, even if it does have a canted gas block or mag wobble they are pretty easy to fix, and you may be able to use those faults in negotiations to get a better price.

My WASR had pretty bad mag wobble, a 15 min fix and its tighter and smoother than an Arsenal.

I agree with what Henschman and Essaysons21 said.

Check the rifle for the basic issues, you can find info on the net how to spot them. Use them if present for a better price, because they fix easily enough if needed. Some redo the metal and wood (I did) and others keep it as is. Then sight it in and have fun.

I guess it would depend on price. Aren’t new ones fairly inexpensive?

I use Tapco mags to avoid wobble... $7 a piece at the local gun shows. They work good and fit perfectly, but the plastic tab is a weak spot... so have some steel ones around if it's a "just in case" rifle. The wobble won't affect feeding, but a broken tab will lol.

I have Wasr 10 that has mag wobble... how would i fix it? thanks. Johnny

An easier and cleaner method than the one linked above is to use shims instead of building up JB weld.

Get some shims, measure to see how much is needed inside the magwell. The port covers on the back of desktop computers (don't know what these are actually called), work perfectly on every WASR I've seen.

Blacken or blue the port covers if you wish, cut them to length, about an inch and a half is all you need. Hit both the inside of the receiver and the rough side of the port cover with some 300 grit sandpaper, clean both well with acetone.

Then mix up some JB weld and epoxy your shims in place. Presto, extremely smooth mag insertion because of the shape and smooth surface of the computer port covers, but zero mag wobble.

I didn't come up with this, but I can't find the original site I found it on. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please post it, it had a bunch of how-to fixes for the WASR.

I've had this on my AK for about 3k rounds, using 30,40,75, and 100 rd magazines and drums. Not a terribly high round count but everything is still solid.

I just realized that as one of the common WASR problems I said "canted gas block," when I really meant "canted front sight block." I guess I was thinking in AR terms, for which they are usually the same thing. ;)

But yeah, if the front sight block it is canted so badly that you can't get a zero by drifting the front sight post over, a lot of times this can be fixed by putting the gun in a vise and whacking the FS tower with a mallet. Good ol soviet gunsmithing! :D

FYI I find that the plastic mags from Tapco and Promag work fine initially, but eventually they become unreliable. Probably because they have plastic feed lips that wear over time. Run original eastern bloc mags for the best reliability. There are some polymer and bakelite ones out there if you like the lighter weight.

I believe the WASR's marked 10/63 are improved........ Century got tired of hearing about it.... I think they are fine guns. I still prefer to buy in person and look them over but the last time I bought, I really looked over 3 of them and they were all fine, ended up just picking one.

If you buy from an online dealer is it possible to ask for a hand selected model? Would they be willing to check out the mag fit prior to shipping?

Call me skeptical, but I think "Hand Select" is a added fee, which has - 0 - guarantee of actually being "Hand Select"

I wouldn't spend the extra.....

Not quite, but close. The quality really improved when they ran out of receivers built under the AWB. The earlier WASR's, including some of the 10/63s, were manufactured to only accept single stack magazines, then later milled out to accept double stacks. This milling looked like it was done by angry drunken beavers with dull teeth. And that, combined with the lack of dimples, is the cause of mag wobble.

There are welded shims in the mag wells of the 10/63s I have seen. I think they are still being milled out, but with much better QC.

In Central Ohio, most of the time you see WASRs for sale, they are actually higher than new, if you know where to go. I really haven't seen bad 10/63s in the last 3-4 years that I have been looking at them / bought a few, etc.... I go to quite a few shows, gun shops, etc.

keep in mind that the current 1063s currently imported are as close as we can get to a true type akm style rifle from the cugir factory, no other country provides this other than the cugir factory. as for the dimples on the receicer through some reserch the dimples has nothing to do with magazine, its there to help strengthen the receiver. the current prices for a new wasr 1063 are a good deal considering as close we can get them to a true type akm rifle

They all have mag wobble and it does not have any effect on feeding.

They will fire when you pull the trigger, every time.

Check for crazy gas block/front site cant.

well if i were to buy it used i would get 2 mags a compensator and a bayonet is this a good deal for $525 or am i getting ripped off ?

How obvious is the canted front sight? Would an inexperienced AK buyer such as myself notice it in the store?

if your buying an AK over the internet i suggest getting a interarms from atlantic. Its not that much more expensive plus it has much better reviews.

I recommend it because thats the one i plan on buying when i get around to it
