I went to my local FFL to pick up an internet purchase and I noticed He had in his pistol case a used Taurus M17C, 8 shot 17 HMR with a 2" barrel. I said to myself and the owner of the store "what a worthless gun!" What is it good for? A 17 HRM from a 2" barrel can't do much but make a large fireball, etc.

So a few weeks go buy and this thing is bugging me. You know the got-ta- have-it syndrom. I can't rationalize why I want a gun with no usefull purpose.

To make a long story short, I went back and bought it. So any suggestions on what it might be good for. Help me rationalize this puchase.

Thanks

*laughs*

A 2" .17HMR? I won't even try to rationalize that purchase.

Just accept it - you had no pressing need for the gun, you just wanted it. If you can afford it without suffering, accept that sometimes you can buy things without having an articulable and defensible reason other than "I wanted it."

My brother in law has a Desert Eagle. I used to own a Calico. Same kind of thing, I think.

My NAA 22S minirevolver - a defense titan - I bought it because it looked like a cute baby gun. In fact, it's nickname around the house is "Fetus" which I admit is kind of sicko.

obvious

You just kept the gun economy moving by keeping a gun dealer in business, a distributor in profits, and a manufacturer from bankruptcy. That's why.

I forgot to mention at least it wasn't to expensive.

Snakes is good, I wonder if CCI will make shot shells for it. :D

It's not useless, when someone somewhere says "Don't buy a Taurus because it will shoot itself into parts sooner rather than later," you'll be able to post, "My Taurus has been shooting high pressure ammunition for years without a problem."

Unless of course .17HMR turns out to be too tough for the design or build quality of the Brazillian horned cow. :D

Finally a defensive carry gun for the mall ninjas that have to walk past the treacherous and scurvy depths of Chucky Cheeze!!!

Well, it could always be a belly gun for a tough-as-nails, squirrel-sized private detective.

Seriously, I don't carry (not yet, anyway), so I can't say that any of my goodies have a purpose beyond shear enjoyment.

Perhaps even out of a short barrel the 17HMR might be fast enough to retain some of its nice, flat trajectory. According to North American Arms website, the CCI Maxi Mag +V exits the muzzle of their 17HMR mini revolvers at 1500 ft/sec (though it is unclear if this is from a 2" or 4" barrel). Could make a decent paper puncher once the short sight radius is mastered. Consider it a challenge.

Also, this velocity makes for a ME of about 85 ft-lb, definately a cut above the kind of energy that many 22lr or even 25 acp loads generate from some pocket pistols. Couple high speed with small frontal area, and the 17HMR may have decent penetration out of a snubbie. Just a guess.

Besides, who knows what collectors might be dying to get their hands on in 2030?

If you want more rationalizations, I've got 'em.

well.....................

well.... would you want to be shot with it? most people will say "NO" it will not knock a man down with " knock down power " as a larger caliber would do. but it will stop a person from possibly doing other stuff. i mean if i was about to rob you and you pulled that out and told me to " stop or i'll shot " you better believe i'm going to stop doing what i'm doing. if you ever run into a situation where you have to shot to save your life in a small caliber , put a couple of rounds in the neck area. other than that the gun is good for making small holes :)

No functioning gun is "Worthless or Useless"! Certain models may be more desirable depending on the situation at hand, but every gun is loved or appreciated by someone. :D

Plinking, small varmits, etc come to mind for possible uses.

The best gun in the world is the one in your hand....even if it's a 17HMR 2 " snub....
See what it shoots, chrono the rounds, figure out the treminal effects, and let us know? Then, try it on feral attack mice, and see how many it takes to put 'em down!

I dunno - you might need a little more gun for those dang feral attack mice.

But as a roach gun now, that'd be a horse of a different color. One or two good hits should put any self respecting roach on the run. :D

You, Sir, are the proud owner of an exceptionally well built 8 try ice pick.

Maby I should put a 2x scope on it for those long range rodents and insects.

:)

You could:

Start a bizarre gun collection.
a snubby collection
a rimfire snubby collection.
a bizarre snubby rimfire collection.

Buy one of the 17HMR rifles, then naturally you'd need a BUG for it!
