Users Feedback on S&W AR-15 M&P

A lot of people rely too much on "the chart" without understanding that "the chart" is merely comparing a single model from a manufacturer up against the milspec M4. The M&P loses points for a 1/9 twist and a couple other things. If you normally shoot 55gr ammo, that's what you want even though it's not milspec. Not every AR needs to be like an M4.

For example, my LaRue OBR 5.56mm has a 1/8 twist and Wylde chamber. Those aren't milspec for an M4, but it's pretty hard to argue with the build quality, reliability, and outstanding accuracy of the OBR. Sometimes, not being milspec can be better for a given application. You just need to know your application and what setup is good for that.

I have a 2 year old M&P15T which has had the crap shot out of it (16,000 rounds worth of action rifle matches, carbine courses and associated practice). About 13,000 of those rounds have been Wolf and Brown Bear. Never had any kind of feed reliability issue with it. It still shoots very accurately. The only thing I've had to replace was the ejector (not extractor) spring (it broke); I have also done some preventative maintenance in the form of a new extractor and extractor spring, plus I replaced the buffer spring with a Sprinco extra power one and the buffer with a H2 to calm the rifle down a bit (S&W's are notoriously overgassed and feel a bit snappy vs others with the proper milspec gas port dimensions). I also ditched the trigger for a Geissele SSA.....although I do have to say in the grand scheme of things the stock trigger from my Smith is a pretty darn good one.

Doesn't see anywhere near as much use these days since I took to assembling my own AR's...but I have a soft spot for the thing and would grab it with confidence if ever I really needed to.

Once you know, there's better rifles (or in my case, components) out there for your $$...but the M&P15's still get a good vote from me.

I bought my son and SIL both S&W AR-15's. Neither are in the Military or are LEO's. I own a S&W AR-15T. If either my son or son in law were headed to the sand box, and I could provide the weaponry S&W would not be my first choice. But, in a non warfighter role our experience has show the S&W is a great gun. When I purchased these rifles I saved a substantial amount of money over Colt. I was a little worried about this decision but the concerns were not warranted. These guns have performed without one problem.

Sig Arms AR-15 Platform

While perusing the site http://jetguns.com as suggested by of the forum members on this thread, I looked closer at the Sig Arms AR-15's available with prices and features comparative to the S&W M&P series AR-15's.

Any Sig AR-15 users out there who want to chime in?

The SIG 556 isn't an AR-15 at all, but rather a US derivative of the SIG SG 550. The SIG 516 is their attempt at a piston driven AR. They've recently put out a DI AR-15, but the model number escapes me at the moment.

So this Sig model SIG R55616BPSRD 556 5.56 16 QD RL which appears very close to the S&W M&P 15T Tactical .556 Ar-15, is NOT an AR-15 platform?

Clue me in to the major differences please.

Magazines & ammo are all that will interchange. It has unique SIG SG 550 derived piston, bolt, gas system, recoil spring system, trigger group - pretty much everything is different from an AR-15.

The 516 is SIG's take on a piston driven AR-15. Lowers will interchange. Some upper parts will interchange, but not all; because there is no standard for piston ARs.

The M400 is SIG's DI AR-15. All parts should interchange. You're also looking at $900 for one. At that point you're pushing Colt, DD, BCM, and LMT prices. Is the SIG M400 as good a rifle? On paper it looks close. But that's on paper. You know what you're getting with a Colt, DD, BCM, or LMT.

Keep asking questions, that's why THR is here

Smith and wesson M&P ORC...worth every penny, never had a problem +2000 rounds. Everyone who picks the rifle up says "wow that light." This is my bump in the night gun/SHTF. Lets hope i never have to use it for that but was sure a fun project to modify.

A local dealer wanted $1200 for the standard mp15 model and $1100 for the ORC model, I thought that was a bit much. I thought these things go for around $700 simething,, or perhaps those are the sports model?

I have the MOE variant, and I love it. My wife got it for me for our 10th anniversary last year. Nary a problem, and I've shot both brass (Lake City M193 and M855), and steel (Tula), and I've never experienced an issue. Here it is in its "reach out and touch someone" configuration:
