Greetings,

I saw a USFA 4" Nickle plated Sheriff model today in excellent condition for just under $600. It look like a good buy since on the USFA web site they are listed for $1300 HERE. Should I run back with my money in my hand? Will the lack of an ejector be a PITA?

I would run back, money in hand. You can do a little better than USFA web prices in other places, but $600 is a deal. Lack of ejector would not be a deal breaker for me.

It's got the black hard plastic grips.

I got them to hold it for me. Why don't I just stay out of those places? :banghead:

I went back today (they're holding it for a week) got the serial number and called USFA. They said it was made in 2000 so it uses Italian parts. Would this be a deal breaker? Sure is a beautiful piece.

Still looks like a good deal to me. I wouldn't buy it because I'm not into that, but the lack of an ejector rod just means you have to carry a pencil or brass rod or something to punch empties out. Often just inverting the cylinder and tapping a little will allow a casing from standard pressure load to fall out until the chambers start to get dirty.

I'd just find a, possibly similar, new Uberti model I want and order it - you'll likely get it delivered for that price - and it'll be what you want. An Italian parts USFA model is basically a Uberti made here. If you want a real US Firearms made in Hartford model, you'll need a few more bucks - but you'll get a nicer revolver, too.

Stainz

I gotta go with stainz on this. I believe Uberti made most of their parts and you can buy a NIB Uberti for under $500 today.

If you want a USFA made gun, then your gonna pay about $800 or more but it is well worth it.

For the Uberti, contact your dealer or call either Cimerron or Taylors & Company. There are others out there but these folks I have dealt with and find them good people.

It's a good price and make no mistake, it will be head and shoulders above anything Uberti ever shipped. You'll be getting a lot more gun with your $100-$150 over a new blued Uberti, not to mention the much higher finish quality and a premium for nickel. The new guns are much better but you'll pay for it too. Think $1100-$1200 for a new nickeled model. I just couldn't live without an ejector.

If it is minty, that is an OK price. I have seen minty USFAs, with Uberti parts, with price tags in the $800 to $900 range. (I can't say they SOLD for that much.) I would rather own a new all-USA-made USFA Single Action, at about a grand, drive-out, than a pre-owned Uberti-parts USFA in the $800 range, but would certainly consider one in the $600 range, if it had a smooth action and the EXACT grips that pleased me. I happen to really like the hard rubber (plastic-like) grips that are standard on USFA sixguns.

To be clear, I am no authority on pre-owned USFA prices, just sayin' what prices would make me pay attention. I did very nearly layaway a particularly nice USFA, which had a Uberti barrel, at least, but the $900-ish price was just too much, and the dealer would not negotiate far enough unless I was willing to buy outright. This sixgun had what appeared to be factory-installed eagle grips, which I really liked.

BTW, no USFA, or Colt SAA, is minty if the there is a turn ring around the cylinder, at the bolt notches. That is going to be an ABUSED gun, or one that had bad timing of the internal parts, which a previous owner failed to notice. Turn rings are normal on Ruger single actions, but not on sixguns with the traditional SAA-type lockwork.

FWIW, I own a USFA sixgun from about early 1997, which is marked U.S. Patent Firearms, an earlier name for USFA, when all the parts were Uberti, and those parts were assembled under the Dome, in the old Colt factory. It is NICE, far above the Italian sixguns imported at that time.

Thanks for the replies. You guys don't make it easy deciding.
The gun is not mint, there is a little scuffing on the sides of the hammer, which I don't think is a big deal my Model 28 has more. If you look real close there is a hint of a turn line, barely noticeable. The overall finish is better than it looks in the photos. The thing just feels "right" ya know?
