I have some Russian Salut pistol powder, but I was wondering if, in a pinch, it could be used for reloading a rifle cartridge like .223 or .308.

Would this be dangerous?

I am assuming this would be a bad idea, but if there was no other option would it work?

Thanks

Pistol or shotgun powders are handy for making low-power loads. For instance, I've used five grains by weight of shotgun smokeless with a 00 Buck as a squirrel load in a .30-'06.

Twenty grains of 2400 with a 150-grain bullet in a .308 is a plinker load. But for some reason you can do stuff with 2400 that apparently won't work with other powders.

I guess you could start way low and work your way up, but it's too easy to go from "just enough" to "oops!"

Never heard of the stuff, but I assume that it's a blank intended powder............if that's so, then it's pretty high intensity stuff........I would be VERY careful in utilizing it for a propellant unless I had reliable data to refer to.

Yeah, Art, I have also used reduced loads with 2400 and a lot of other powders, that said, I have some real reservation about stuff that no data exists for.....as per example A friend gave me some .50 BMG powder that some data sites have characterized as 'slow as burning sand'.....he uses it for about anything in the .30 range........but it's so slow it is very difficult to exceed 2M with it., even with a case full!!.......a faster product would lean the other direction...............Most strongly suggest the OP go to cast boolits site and make a query in the powders section.

From Pat's Reloading:

Russian Shotshell Powder, SALUT,we got work up sheet from PMC, for using it in 45 Auto, 230 FMJ, just tested it in M10/ colt 45 auto and works great, done up in .3 Kilograms, 8 bottles in box===5.3 lbs, 58.00 (11.00 LB), works great in 9mm also, ran in my Mac and CZ75 zings right along,

Whatever it is, I would be very cautous using it in reduced load rifle calibers, if I used it at all.

Cheap surplus powder with no tested data can be
a very expensive way to save money.

A couple threads on the Cast Boolits site mention that Salut powder is near the same as Unique for burn rate. I would check it out and use at your own risk.
