Using Unique powder

Unrelated question, but what's the max safe load on a 230 gr FMJRN with Unique?

My Hornady manual seems to say that 6.1gr is the absolute max and should be used with extreme caution, but I've had multiple HK45 shooters tell me that 6.3gr w/ a 230 gr FMJRN is a perfect match for the gun. I've also seen others claim they've used 6.8gr.

This is just my opinion on Unique and 230fmj's. My experience in my guns is that 6.5 grains is about a maximum standard load and anything over that is getting near +P pressures. That is seating to an overall length of 1.265"-1.275 and as you know seating deeper increases pressure.

Times have changed. I am looking at my Lyman Reloading Handbook, 41st edition (publication date 1957) and the Max load for a 230 Jacketed is 7.7 grains of Unique at 880 fps!

The suggested load was 6.5 grains at 760 fps.

I found 6.0 grains too light with 230's in my M1911. Did not try 6.5 grs as I am using W231 with 230 FMJ.

I used W231 and I think it is cleaner then Unique. I have 6 Lbs. of Unique so I will have to tolerate it for a bit longer.

I use 6.0 grains Unique for cast 45acp and am well pleased with it. It is not as dirty as bullseye and works in all pistol calibers I have ever loaded for. When you don't want to keep several different powders for your reloading needs Unique is a good all around performer!

I've been reloading for just under two years now and Unique is the most common powder among the five different manuals that I own. I use it for every pistol caliber that I reload and I've had good results with my limited experience.

With cast bullets ? Most of the soot is from the lube, not the powder, unique isnt bad with jacketed bullets, unique is one of my favorite powders, in 44mag 44 spec 45 colt, 357 , its a great powder, but its not going to get you top velocity

I will never be without some Unique and some 2400, with those two you can come up with an adequate load for almost anything.

I've also been using Universal Clays in my .40 S&W loads, they shoot very nice and are accurate. Once my Unique is used up, I may switch to it, 100%, as it burns clean.

I've got a 8lb keg left and when it's gone I'll get another. I also like the 231, H110, 700x, and last but not least Bulleye.
