OK, it didn't really follow me home, this was a while in the making.

In 2006 Remington did a special run of commemorative M-40 rifles, made to the 1966 specs w/parkerized finish, wood stock, clip slot receiver, and what looks to be a varminter barrel. Serial numbers were SSAXXXX, with U.S. stamped over them.

A friend of mine in a store had one come through and he set it aside for me. I was deployed for a while, and finally got around to sending the last check off last month.

I'm not a big fan of commemoratives, as I believe guns should be owned to be used, but this is the closest I've come to buying something to put in a display case. If you're thinking of getting one, pick it up - they're amazing.

Now, if I could only find a Redfield 3x9...

Very nice. I've thought about buying one of those too as it's pretty unlikely we'll ever find a real one. They are a very nice reproduction and I come from the same perspective as you, not caring much for commemorative guns in general.

I have had chances in the past to purchase the proper green Redfield scopes but it was many years ago when the thought of Remington producing a mating rifle wasn't even considered a possibility. Now that the rifles are out there, the scopes are in the same ballpark as 8X USMC Unertl scopes. Good luck on your project though.

If you ever get to the Portland area, stop by the Oregon Military Museum and you can get a look at a REAL M40, and certainly one of the best examples in existance.

Thanks, that's a valuable photo to me. I've seen the S/N further to the rear as well, I believe, in a few pics, but I could be wrong.

I'm looking for a Redfield base & rings at the moment, got a 3x9 scope that should fit the bill for a while. Once it's all together, I'll be hitting the range.
