I'm headed to Utah in a couple weeks for business, and will be there early to visit friends. Can anyone recommend a good shooting range in Utah County? I'd like to shoot pistol and probably skeet. Thanks.

Rangemaster's in Springville is indoor, you can shoot rifle and pistol. That's on the south end of the county. The only one on the north end closed a year or two ago, IIRC.

To shoot skeet, you're probably going to have to go out in the boonies and find a safe spot. Most folks just use the west side of the lake to do all their shooting.

As sixgunner said, the only commericial indoor range left in Utah County is Rangemasters. The municipal Orem Fitness Center does have a small indoor pistol range, but the hours are awkward (6p-9p, Mon-Fri, something like 10-2 or 10-4 on Saturday, make sure to call for hours and to reserve a lane), but it is only $3 to shoot there and they allow pistols up to .44 mag and .22 rifles.

Provo city has an outdoor range just up the canyon a few miles, but you need to get a key for it this time of year.

As far as skeet, an unrelated Provo Gun Club does various clay games every Wednesday evening and one Saturday a month.

If your friends have a thrower of some kind, you can also head over to the far side of the lake and shoot in the unincorporated area of the county, as mentioned before. Your friends should know where that is.

If you're willing to go to the SLC area, you'll have a few more options.

So would the area I have circled in red work for skeet? I can bring a hand thrower.

Yes, there is a big bowl there on the west side of the road there that a lot of people shoot in. You can't miss it. I'm headed to that area on Saturday, I'll give you an odometer reading from the last intersection to that area. I tend to go a a mile or so further south to avoid the crowds.

If you really want to have some fun

there's an indoor range around Mapleton (can't remember exactly where) but they rent full-autos and 50 cals. If you're interested, PM me and I'll call my brother for the name of it.

brighamr, I'm guessing that's Rangemasters in Springville, since Mapleton and Springville are right next to each other. They do rent full-auto there. If you wouldn't mind checking with your brother, I'd love to know if there is another local range I've somehow missed.

TX1911fan, on your map there is a spot where 73 and 68 cross. Assuming you're coming from the freeway, you'll turn left (south) there. A Smith's grocery store is on the south west corner of that intersection. Can't miss it, it is the only stop light after you get out of Lehi. The bowl where many people shoot is 11 miles on the road south of there. Basically anywhere from there down the road for another 5 miles or so on the right (west side of the road) is fair game. There are a couple of spots you can't shoot, but they are pretty clearly marked. There are some places on the left where you can shoot by the lake as well.

Depending on the day, it can be pretty crowded along there. This morning, we must have seen 70 vehicles with people out shooting, maybe more. If you go on a weekday it should be almost completely empty. Sunday is pretty calm, if you're of the flavor that doesn't mind shooting on the Sabbath.

By the way, if you need clays, all the local Wal-Marts are out and have been for weeks. You'll have no problem getting them at Sportman's Warehouse in Provo, Gunnies in Orem (closed on Sunday), CAL Ranch in American Fork, and Cabela's in Lehi.
