So I'm looking for and HD shotgun and will ultimately want a trap/skeet shotgun. I was looking at the 930 combo 18.5" & 28" VR. My question is, what is the utility of the sights on the SPX version? Is it mainly for shooting slugs? B/C it seems to me everything else would be fine with just a bead at shotgun distances. I ask b/c the 18.5/28 combo comes with just a bead.

Go with the bead. I was going down a similar road to you a while ago (but that road abruptly stopped due to vet bills). I'd go with the combo. Even if you bought the SPX and then another skeet/trap barrel, the rear rail mount would get in the way of your front bead. Also Mossburg barrels are surpisingly expensive (compared to Rem 870 ones) so you get a better deal with the combo.

Also I think the finish between the SPX and combo 930s is different. And I'm the type that would get annoyed looking at the shotgun with a different finish on the barrel vs receiver.

For the most part, a bead is all you need for nearly any situation that calls for a shotgun.

25 yards is about the maximum that buckshot will be effective, and you really only need a bead to do that

Where a "rifle-sighted" type setup really becomes desirable is if you plan on doing any slug shooting at extended ranges.

I have a "rifle-sighted" barrel on my 870 that is sighted in for 50 yards for a slug, but for A-zone or B-zone (out to about 25 yards), I use the front sight just like I would use a bead for buckshot.

I agree with the above posts. At 25 yards or less, you should be fine with a bead for every purpose. I suppose you could pop off the LPA rear sight if you change out for a longer barrel. Especially if the "sporting" barrel has a vent rib, you could probably shoot over the rail without any obstruction of your line of sight? Not sure - probably someone has tried that and can confirm/deny. But the bead should be no handicap at closer range and may/may not be faster for you.

My experience? You just can't go wrong with a bead. I have several shotguns that I have used for everything from plinking, skeet shooting and deer hunting with slugs. I have bead sights on all of them and I have no desire to change that. I may try a tritium bead sometime.

Anyone shot trap or skeet with a 930?

If it has a bead on the end of the barrel, you can shoot skeet with it. I've even managed to hit them with my 870 marine magnum (18" barrel).
