If you're looking for a .224 bullet to give you good penetration, the V-Max is not it. If you look at the name alone, the V in V-Max stands for varmint and is designed as a frangible thin jacket that ruptures on contact. As far as I know, the Hornady line of bullets in .224 does not have a bullet with controlled expansion. I'm not sure how the heavier match type .224 bullets are rated for hunting.
Hornday does have spire point bullets in .224 which made in the standard (non-bonded) construction for general hunting. I have used the v-max for shooting a steel targets within 25 yards and have never been hit with ricochet or splatter material. They seem to do a great job of disintregrating when striking rifle rated steel at that range.
