So has anyone else heard of the Athens ga preacher vacationing in Jamaica that upon trying to go home the airport authorities foun a single .22 shell in the seam of his baggage and arrested him on the spot for illegal ammunition and terroristic threats. He faces a minimum of seven years in prison, but doesn't have a clue how it got in his bag.

Any thoughts?

Also if anyone has found a link please post it, I haven't had a chance to look yet

In the seam of his checked baggage? My best guess is whoever "found" it planted it there and the preacher missed the subtle request for a bribe to make it all go away. Or maybe the solicitation hasn't happened yet.

Thanks Jimmy, an basically he's a preacher from a smallish church a couple towns over from me, kinda upsets me how this is all turning out, they said the illegal ammo charge is a small fine he cam just pay and go home, but they're trying to stick him with terrorists threats...... :/

A single spent round of .22 is crazy business, at least its not a live one like the one single round of .22 short found in England.

Any thoughts?

Being a preacher is immaterial to the story. Or, it is a contributing factor giving that religious leaders through time often have been the leaders of violence against others.

Mexico has very strict rules. Jamaica apparently does as well. It pays to abide by the law in foreign countries.

From the story, quoting the wife...
She added that security baggage checks at the Atlanta airport in the USA did not identify any contraband.

Imagine that, US airport security might have missed contraband. Oh wait, that is an ongoing problem.

Agreed about the us airports missing stuff, but seriously isnt there some way you can even travel with ammo? I was under the impression that you coils in some form or fashion, but o course his wasn't in a box or container at all nd he wasn't in the us....

News tonight said he was released with a 3,000$ fine for illegal ammo, still seems fishy to me, but at least he can come on home now

Sounds similar to the preacher that got busted in Moscow a few years back for rifle ammo.

What's even more annoying about this is that a couple years ago, when I worked airport security (Don't hate me, I did my best not to be a jerk), I snagged a foreign diplomat with a handgun ammo hidden in the lining of his briefcase between the hinge and the outer shell. If you opened the briefcase, the outer covering opened up on the ends just wide enough to stick a dowel through (or in this case ammunition). The ammo was snaked down in dead center of the briefcase, so definitely intentional, and definitely trying to conceal it on the xray behind the hinge. Of course, diplomatic immunity being what it is, they just let the guy walk.

Next thing you know all travelling religious officials will be getting the "special treatment" when flying.

Thats what he gets for going to a 4th world and corrupt country like Jamaica.. Why do people vacation in such pits, when there are so many safer options available. It's all about money.. Believe me, I have traveled around the world and the bureaucratic dogs will try to suck as much out of you as they can. Just the fact that a spent .22 shell puts an honest man in prison while scum roam the streets of Jamaica armed to their teeth robbing , raping and murdering innocent people should tell you something about the backward moral system of this place. It seems in countries like Mexico and Jamaica, only law-abiding citizens are arrested for having guns to defend themselves from ruthless thugs who may or may not be involved with the crooked police force.

Personally, I think if we had a good leadership in this country, we would advocate every American citizen carry a firearm to defend themselves in these type of crime-ridden and lawless countries and place sanctions on these countries for harassing or imprisoning our citizens. Yeah, it's their country, but where would a place like Jamaica be without our American tourist dollars? The fruit industry just isn't doing it. Western Tourism is #1 in the Caribbean. Sadly, tourists are prey for both the thieves and crooked government agents.

Nothing fishy, that is what you call doing business in the third world. You can bet someone is having a nice coke party right now, thanks to the preacher's kind donation.

Are you saying there is a pattern?

Google "preacher arrested guns" and "preacher arrested ammunition" and look at what turns up. Preachers get busted with some regularity for gun-related charges.

i thought you said his being a preacher was immaterial. please don't allow your time on the board or your post count to cause you to forget that your apparent vitriol toward religion is your own business, and has no place on the site.

WOW....are you SERIOUS? Let's just violate the sanctity and laws of other countries. Want crime-ridden and lawless? Try D.C., or Houston or..pick a place

Why don't you start by advocating your plan here in every state and city within our own borders first..........unbelievable this type of mentality exists......

Yeah I am dead serious.. I don't care about the sanctity of the laws of lawless and corrupt countries. When you are in a place infested with thugs, corrupt police and you are a prime target, I think it should be nothing less than common courtesy. I think the COsta Rican government has a better example to set for these countries. In Costa Rica, foreigners, with proper permits can carry guns with them. However, the crime and corruption in Jamaica is many times more than that in Costa Rica.

Go and compare the murder rate of Kingston, Jamaica to Houston.. Kingston has the highest murder rate and most dangerous slums in the world. And, in Houston, I can carry a gun to protect myself and I am not advertised to all the local thugs that I am a dumb tourist, not knowing my way around town; i.e., easy pickings.

Even The Bahamas is under siege as the criminals are becoming more ruthless and more and more tourists on cruise ships are getting robbed at gun point. Why not rob all the rich American tourists, when they are unarmed, helpless and wealthy! Easy pickings. If you don't believe me you can read news articles about the growing crime problem against tourists in places like THe Bahamas.

Also, I have no problem with law-abiding foreigners being allowed to carry a weapon for personal protection as long as they notify the appropriate authorities in advance. Foreign tourists are always more of a target than locals, considering they don't know their way around the place and don't always speak the language/dialect properly. Therefore, foreign tourists IMO, would be even greater candidates for CCW.

I am sory you were unable to read my full statement, but let me help you out giving that you conveniently left off the second part which I have quoted below. With that said, it was TempestP226 who brought up the ammo smuggling preacher, not me.

No vitriol against religion, although you make a good case for it. Instead it is vitriol for the category by which a person accused is often claimed to be innocent, as if the category itself makes it so, be it being a daddy, mommy, preacher, rabbi, deacon, school teacher, welfare work, doctor, lawyer, former drug addict who has turned his life around, a child, etc. While we want to believe that such folks are good and wholesome all the time, the fact is that they cannot be counted to be such just because of their titles or affiliations.

Being a preacher is immaterial to the story. Or, it is a contributing factor giving that religious leaders through time often have been the leaders of violence against others.

Thanks for reposting what you typed and again illustrating your problems with religion. We don't delve into religion on this site, much as we now avoid political discussion, so again, kindly keep your insight into the historical violence of religious leaders out of the conversation.

I'm not "blaming the victim" here, but I'm super over cautious about checking and re-checking my bags for anything that would be considered contraband.
Despite my rigor, somehow a .22lr shell casing got into one of my bags, a sturdy carry-on with perfectly functioning zippers and no holes. I literally have no idea how that .22 casing got into that bag... my travel bags and range bags are absolutely separate - I never cross purpose them.
This time around finding the casing wasn't too big of a deal - I hadn't left yet for my vacation and in any event it was being shipped FedEx ground to a hotel within the continental US.

A customer at work brought this case up tonight...it was kind of cool to talk about it with him. We both agreed that it was odd that he was released with a fine of $3000.
Im just glad that he will be able to come back home!
