Hello guys,

I just bought this Valmet Petra a week ago. When i was researching it I had a real hard time finding picures of the parts and picures of it disassembled, so I thought I would do other people who are considering buying one a favor by post some picures. What I needed was picures of the receiver without a stock on it so I could find aftermarket stock options :)

This one is in 308w and I got it for 1000$ with 3 20rnd original magazines and original scope mount/rings.

The Petra/Hunter is basically a Valmet m78 and most parts are interchangeable as I understand it.
My plan is to move the trigger forward, put in a Tapco G2, pistolgrip and a self made buttstock as well as to convert some steel hk G3 magazines for it, so I don't damage the originals as they are worth quite alot of cash. I found that M1A magazines may be possible to use in it, but that would require modifiactions to the rear of the magwell. Possibly some extending of the Feed Lips of the magazines.

The buttstock is fixed to the receiver quite simply it's just a bolt that is screwed in with a 13mm pipe. The recoil pad is attached with 2 long starhead screws. The dustcover and barrelshroud is fastened with flathead screws, 3 on the dustcover and 2 on the barrelshroud.

they are kind of rare, it's one of the few semi auto's that's legal on a hunting permit in norway. it seems to be quite accurate to for an ak type rifle :)

Very cool! From what I've read the hunting pattern aks tend to be more accurate than the rest.
I didn't know valmet even made one

I would put a more appropriate scope on it , like a 1-6x or so mounted a couple inches more
forward and call it good. Trigger spring work or Tapco trigger wouldn't hurt if it fit. That rifle is MUCH better for anything I can think of as configured , this military look craze is a lot of BS in most cases. I would fight with that rifle. Keep your eye out for an extra real mag or two for it, spend your money on a real mag and a good scope maybe trigger tuning- thats it ! I had a Yugo .308 Hunter model like that many years, used it hog hunting with an IR factory rig . Usually Valmets have great triggers, smooth but longish pull which works good for hunting and combat.

only going to make reversibel ¨improvements¨ so i can do better in ipsc, but i might put a suppressor on it later. already started making a dragunov style stock.
it has a schmidt & bender 3-12 on it now, but i m going to get a vortex strike eagle for it as i need the S&B for my dedicated mose rifle when the hunting season comes.

Cool looking rifle. Is the scope mount similar to other AK variants? I'd like to see a picture of the other side.

Saiga 308 magazines might be easier to work with than M1A mags.

can't get saiga magazines here, but steel g3 mags fits with little modification, only need make a locking lug and remove the side plates.

i wil try to take some picures of the dustcover and scope mount later today.

I remember seeing those in the early 80's in the guns & ammo annual, when I was a little tyke and I would read that and other gun mags that sat on my uncle's coffee table. Never saw one in person. They always intrigued me. So did the Leader rifles from Australia.
