"BBM6837 is the serial number, it indicates your Model 686-2 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless was manufactured in 1988. The other numbers and markings are assembly numbers, used to track parts in the factory. They were not recorded and have no meaning after the gun is assembled.
The 4 inch midnight black stainless 686 was a limited run gun made in 1988 with 1559 manufactured. Product code was 104250. Original retail price was $445.00."

The above info was provided by Radagast in the DOB thread. Being new to the forum I wasn't sure if that was the venue to try and get a value and I wasn't able to find a "value" forum.

Anyway, can anyone tell me the value of the gun as described above? Grading is well above 90(I looked at a book to determine this). I paid $300 a few days ago.

Thanks all!

If everything else checked out all right on the gun mechanically, then I think you did extremely well for a limited edition Model 686. Enjoy your new aquisition!

Congrats on your "black magic" 686!! That is what S&W referred to that finish as.

With the current production MIM, wind up 686's fetching + $600, I would put the value on yours at $650+, at the very least. Your 686 is superior to the current production, and a scarce variant to boot!

You did very well!! :) Enjoy that black 686!!

No, the finish is not durable, which is why they no longer offer it. I bought one (6 inch) that has a red dot scope mounted. $395 but the guy claimed it was a mismarked 586 and did not know it was actually blackened stainless. If you intend to use it alot, expect the finish to wear. If you want one with pristine finish, better make it a safe queen. The finish on mine is wearing so I shoot it alot in competition, love that gun.

I saw that asked on another forum. I saw mixed responses. This one was a service weapon and is graded well.

Give ya $350! :D

It'd be a pretty sorry 686 that wasn't worth at least $300.

If it's a good shooter (it probably is) I wouldn't be the least bit concerned about the finish.
