Greetings!

I donated the hide of an elk I harvested this fall to a local non-profit educational group and as I am getting my tax stuff in order, realized I could probably write such a thing off as a charitable donation. I have no idea how to put a value on such a thing. I went online and found elk leather in bulk for about $4/ square foot. Anyone have any experience in commercial leather or tanning that could estimate a value for me?

Thanks,
Josh

That's a great link, thanks. The price I quoted in the OP was basically for bulk scraps from a company that makes leather ware.

I'm happy to use that price at the site you pointed me to as a basis of estimating the fair market value.

Never thought of deducting my donated hides. But a raw elk hide is worth way less than $4 a foot - most of that $4 is the tanning cost, not the hide cost. Best way to get an accurate estimate would be to contact a fur/hide buyer.

From an ex fur buyer here in Illinois, deer hides no matter size or color would bring $5.00. I never had the opportunity to buy an elk hide, so I can not give you an honest price for one. IF I would buy one, I would offer no more than $20.00. Sorry I can't help anymore than this.
