I just recently got rid of my only .308 rifle, and found 720 rounds of the following ammo. It was in heavy green rubber battle packs, 200 rounds per, and I had some loose boxes as well. On the outside of the box it says this:

20 Cartridges
cal. 7,62 mmx51
BALL
Hirtenberger Patronenfabrik
A-2552 Hirtenberg, Austria

I seem to recall it may even be boxer primed. VERY accurate out of my Tikka T-3 rifle.

Just wondering what I could sell it for, and if there was much of a demand for this type of ammo.

Thanks!

Here is a site with prices of surplus ammo as of Dec 2005.

Hirtenberger has not been available for a while, so there may be a tiny premium attached to it.

It was one of the best surplus 308's available. I would put the quality of the Hirt right up there, or better than Australian or South African. YMMV

I'm holding onto my Hirtenberger for dear life. Far and away the most accurate milsurp .308 I've ever fired - I could get 1½ MOA with it from a Steyr Scout rifle. Very nice stuff indeed! If you were within reach, I'd buy it from you immediately, but shipping costs will make it too expensive.

That is a tough call. Pricing ammo is always hard. I know you can presently get .308 lake city for 114 for 500. This puts your pricing of 150 for 720 square in the ball park.

The only limiting factor I can see is if someone who lives far away wants to purchase it, and the shipping becomes prohibitive. But, I think there are plenty of people who would be willing to pay the extra in shipping to get hold of some Hirt.

Good luck on what ever you do with it.

Buy it cheap and stock it deep. I'm with the Preacherman on this - I have a case I'm just going to sit on.... who cares what its worth for resale. It's worth more to me... :)

I've only seen one battle pack of Hirt, and it was $49.95 for 200. I should have bought it, but needed other stuff at the time.

$150 would be a good price for anyone buying, but if I was selling...I'd ask $175 to start. As Preacherman said, shipping would kill the deal, but if you walk around a gun show with Hirt in the hand, you might get a premium. Or you could hold onto it for another year until it's all gone, and then charge a large premium.
