I have received a gift of several hundred rounds of Hirtenberger 7.62x51 Ammunition. The 20 rd boxes are marked Austria and the ammo appears very high quality. Would this be safe in my DPMS AP-4? Anything you can tell me about this ammo would be appreciated.

Hirtenberger is a top quality european ammunition manufacturer.

Is the stuff you have top quality.... probably.

Back in the day, when a man could get all the Hirt. he wanted, we sold tons of it.

I used the 7.62X51 Steel jacket lead core to harvest more than a few hogs and deer, worked great, expansion was not as great as some other bullets... but it did the job.

I never did any accuracy testing on the stuff but I could get 1.5" groups
(100y), on a good day, a real good day, out of the ol' enfield I shot it through.

Non-corrosive and reliable, at least the stuff I had was. 147gr Lead Core, Copper Washed Steel Jacket. I shouldn't think it would harm your DPMS, used in moderation... some say steel jacket is harder on the barrel than copper jacket... but THAT is another debate.

Made in Austria

highly regarded as good ammo

boxer primed so it is reloadable (pity DAG isn't)

I'm looking to get some boxes of DAG this weekend.
