Value of Ruger 3 screw blackhawk in 30 carbine?

Just purchased an Old Model 3 screw Blackhawk in 30 carbine
with a 7.5 inch barrel. Serial number indicates it was manufactured in
1972. 90% condition with original wood grips and it has not had
the transfer bar safety installed. Locks up tight.
I think I got a really good deal on it and it came with 2 boxes of ammo as well.
Any idea as to the value of this revolver ?????
Opinions and thoughts on this revolver are appreciated.
I own blackhawk revolvers in 357, 45 and 44 magnum
and also have a couple of single six revolvers.
Love the way they handle and shoot.
Guess I need to find one in 41 magnum now ;-)

All I can say is plugs, and muffs. The .30 carbine blackhawk is LOUD.

I'd say $350-$400. The .30's have never been very popular and usually go for a hundred bucks less than a comparable sample in another chambering. Hasn't been that long ago that you could find them easily well under $300 because nobody wanted them.

I think they made something like close to 33,000 of them from 1967 to 1973. By comparison Ruger produced slightly over 345,000 in .357 Mag from 1962 to 1973. So the .30 Carbine 3 screw Blackhawk isn't exactly all that common but the caliber isn't in as much demand as the other models. I would say Gordon was right on the mark at around $500, plus or minus, for its current value.

A Loud Fire Breathing Dragon !!!!

WOW!!!!!!

Got this revolver home last night, checked it out and cleaned it.
Shot some rounds out of it and man does it BARK..... LOUD!!!!!
Also shot three rounds out of the revolver right after it turned dark.
This thing is a fire breathing DRAGON.
Fire shooting out the barrel and cylinder.
Impressive, but would not want to shoot it without ear protection.
Anybody got any ideas or opinions why this caliber is so LOUD in a revolver ????

I haven't looked since I don't shoot .30 Carbine, but you would think that powder/reloading component companies would find a good recipe for .30C in a revolver....

The Lyman manuals have a lot of loads.
The 32/20WCF load is supposed to be a good one to use in the Ruger BH.
Loads for that are in the Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook.
I've been meaning to load up some with a 115grn cast bullet and 231 powder, but just never get around to it.

DA 30 Carabine revolver would be KOOL to own. Unless one is active member of SASS SA revolver is only useful if chambered for powerful hunting calibers.

You're half right. It is common myth that cartridges like the .22Mag and .30Carbine are loaded with rifle powders. Powders are chosen for the cartridge's capacity and pressure range, not barrel length. Despite the guns that originally chambered them, both cartridges share more in common with magnum revolver rounds than rifle cartridges. Thus, the same powders yield the highest velocities in both rifles and handguns. For the .30, that's usually H110/296, a powder commonly used for maximum velocities in magnum revolvers. Speer #14 recorded some of the highest velocities with AA #9, a powder that burns faster than 2400.

The .30 is loud in handguns because of its pressure and its powder capacity relative to its bore size (overbore). Not because it's loaded with a particularly slow burning rifle powder.

Unless one is active member of SASS SA revolver is only useful if chambered for powerful hunting calibers.

A single action revolver is useful for ANY purpose for which a handgun is appropriate.

A single action is as good as a double action in my opinion,
especially for what me and most people use them for.
Hunting and recreational shooting.
I'm sure many will disagree with me, but I prefer the
feel of a single action over a double action

I had the misfortune of standing alongside a friend when he shot the Ruger by the time he fired the second round I was 10 feet behind him. Not a pleasant experience. A year ago I bought a 10in Contender barrel in 30 carbine. I was all set for another violent noise experience. NOT Even with MIL SUR ammo I believe this is quieter that my 14 in 41 Mag contender or my 4 in S & W 19 in .357

I wonder how much of the noise issue is the cylinder gap? I would love to shoot alongside a Ruger, but don't know anyone that has one.

A 30 carbine runs around 14.5-15gr of H110 with a 110gr bullet.
A 357 Magnum runs 21-22gr of H110 with a 125gr bullet.
Both are extremely loud and FUN!

I enjoy shooting mine. Lots of good reduced loads and cast bullet loads, start with the 32-20 loads as mentioned. You can go with the rifle loads when you need them. All seem to be accurate in my OM 30C's.

Taurus made a Raging Thirty for a while, maybe 1990's-2000 or so. Not popular enough to stay around.

And, yes, there is no requirement for practicality. They are just plain fun to shoot. BTW, I have both Blackhawk (ca. 1980) and Automag III in 30 carbine. Not sure of the value, but I do not buy guns to resell. I buy them to shoot.

When I reloaded 30 carbine, I ran a slightly reduced load of 296. Turns out you are not supposed to reduce loads of 296 much but I never saw such a warning in those days.

I picked up a Ruger 3 screw 41 mag with a 6.5" barrel about a year ago and all I can say is don't wait. It shoots like I have had it all my life. I am new to the 3 screw Ruger and have a 357 and 44 to keep the 41 from getting lonely. Hands down the 41 is my all time favorite of the 3. Greg
